Three years ago today, our department and our community faced a moment we will never forget.

On August 10, 2022, Officer Seara Burton was doing what she loved most, serving this city with her K9 partner, Brev. During a traffic stop, she was shot. In that instant, the lives of everyone who knew and loved her were changed forever.

The days and weeks that followed were filled with hope, prayer, and unwavering support from across the world, but they were also filled with the quiet, personal battles of her family. Her wife, Sierra, her mother, Jennifer, her “Ma” Ami, her sisters, her grandparents, and so many others carried a weight that most of us can’t imagine. They showed the same strength Seara had always shown, even as their hearts broke.

Seara chased her dream of becoming a K9 handler and achieved it through hard work and determination. She served with courage and compassion, and she made people laugh even on the hardest days.

Everyday, but especially today, we honor Seara and stand alongside her family. This is more than remembering a fallen officer, it’s remembering a wife, a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, a niece, and a friend.

We will never forget her, and we will never stop standing with the family she loved so much.
