One way VHI's Emergency Department Care Coordination ( ) program supports is through partnership with the Healthcare-Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) program at the Virginia Department of Health.

💡The Multidrug Resistant Organism ( ) flag was introduced to help bridge the gap in facility communication.

These flags notify facilities when a patient with a history of MDRO status is admitted, ensuring infection control precautions are implemented as early as possible to reduce risk of transmission. MDRO flags confirm cases of Carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO) and Candida auris and populate alerts in the EDCC portal and on EDIE reports for all particpating hospitals in Virginia.

🔎From 2025 into 2026, more than 3,700 encounters involving patients with an MDRO flag have occurred across engaged facilities statewide, while 46 hospitals have enabled targeted, real-time alerting by identifying specific individuals or teams to be notified when a flagged patient arrives at their facility.

The PHRP equips public health teams with the information needed to track emerging trends, support faster response efforts and improve outcomes throughout the Commonwealth.

💡A new study from Virginia Commonwealth University shows how use varied across Virginia during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and sheds light on disparities in access and use.

Using data from Virginia’s All-Payer Claims Database ( ), the team was able to examine real-world patterns in care delivery at scale, reinforcing the APCD’s role as a critical resource for evidence-based research.

➡️ VHI recently attended the National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO) Virtual Conference, where Dawniece N. Lewis, MPH presented on "Using All-Payer Claims Data ( ) to Understand Health Spending in Virginia" during the State Showcase on Policy Insights, Market Dynamics and Care Model Analysis
➡️ The team joined the Virginia Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (VAFCC) Conference in Roanoke, where Hannah Matty, RN from VHI and Morgan Croft-Schornak from PointClickCare met with attendees to discuss how the Emergency Department Care Coordination ( ) program supports continuity of care throughout the Commonwealth
➡️ Kelly Richards, PMP and Gillian Kurtic represented the Heath Information Technology ( ) team in Nashville at the eHealth Exchange ( ), The Sequoia Project and Carequality annual meetings, connecting with national leaders and bringing home strategies to enhance information exchange in Virginia

📍At Milliman HealthVision 360, Senior Director of Program Operations Dawniece N. Lewis, MPH presented on the impact of the Virginia All-Payer Claims Database ( ) in informing new research, reducing unnecessary care and providing insights that guide smarter healthcare decisions across the Commonwealth and beyond.

📍The Public Health Reporting Pathway ( ) team attended the Virginia Public Health Association Annual Conference, engaging with partners on strengthening information systems to support public health priorities across Virginia.

📍This week, the team is at the Civitas Networks for Health® Annual Conference ( ), where VHI CEO Kyle B. Russell, MDA co-led a session on integrating APCD and HIE data to unlock public health insights. Kyle was also nominated to serve on the 2026 CIVITAS Board of Directors!

This week, the came together to attend one of the final Richmond Flying Squirrels games at The Diamond! ⚾️

Each year, VHI sets aside a special moment to celebrate our staff. This time, we enjoyed a relaxed evening with teammates and their families, sharing good food, great company and a classic Richmond experience. It was the perfect way to connect, unwind and honor the people who make VHI such a wonderful place to work.

💡 Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University used Virginia’s All-Payer Claims Database ( ) to map where primary care shortages are most prevalent. According to the study, rural communities face the biggest gaps in primary care, affecting prevention, chronic disease management and overall health outcomes. It is inspiring to see how VHI's data can support meaningful studies that bring attention to healthcare gaps and opportunities across Virginia.

Last week, VHI's Health Information Exchange ( ) team joined CRISP Shared Services in Maryland for their annual All-Teams meeting!

🏕️ This year's meeting was camp-themed, complete with fireside chats and matching T-shirts. The team had a great time connecting with other HIEs and CSS team members, discussing shared goals and strengthening the partnerships that drive our work forward.

💡Have you heard about SAFE Birth VA?
Following rising maternal morbidity concerns in Virginia, the Standardized Approaches For Emergencies in Birth ( ) initiative, led by the Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative, was written into law earlier this year. This new legislation will require all hospitals, emergency departments and birthing centers to follow standardized, evidence-based protocols when treating pregnant or postpartum patients in crisis.
