Project Yoga Richmond is a non-profit organization that makes yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or financial ability. Project Yoga Richmond increases access to yoga through pay-what-you-can community classes that help support a variety of yoga and mindfulness outreach programs in the Greater Richmond area. The idea grew from the beloved yoga teacher Arlene Bjork’s desire to take yoga to the people in their communities and make it accessible to everyone who wanted it. It wasn’t just another yoga studio, it was a place for community, with yoga at its core. After Arlene passed away in 2009, a group of her students came together to reflect on her life and teachings. Anytime that you practice, volunteer, or donate to Project Yoga Richmond, you play a vital role in the community movement to increase access to the healing power of yoga.

Here are a few photos from yesterday’s Earth Day practice .

(Thank you photographers , , and 📸)

It was a great time had by all. The rain didn’t pour, it was a beautiful morning, we celebrated the Earth and the life of our dear friend Jonah Holland. And it didn’t even matter that the highway was shut down, and there was a 10k that had and trapped in Fan neighborhood gridlock for nearly and hour. We still made it!!

Thank you .york.rainer for being such an inspiration.

Thank you for co-teaching and for being such a great light.

This is just the beginning. Project Yoga Richmond continues to regrow and reimagine itself, while also remaining committed to serving the community through mindfulness. Thank you for your continued support.

Hello Friends!

I come to you from a beautiful retreat center in the jungle of Ojochal, Costa Rica called Yacumama. The word Yacumama means “the Mother of Waters” and I am here on a deep spiritual journey in order to harness my intention and find clear vision towards what is to come next.

I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who have offered your support and blessings, both energetically and financially, and have answered the call to action regarding the re-evolution of Project Yoga Richmond. I also wish to acknowledge the many requests I have received, and suggestions for classes. Thank you for acknowledging my words, thank you for sharing the post, thank you for your encouragement and offers to serve. It is very humbling to say the least. If it somehow was unrecognizable before, your responses have shown that PYR was meaningful and served a tremendous purpose in the Richmond community. Many were healed by the offerings of classes, the PYR sangha, and many regarded the studio as home.

I want to share with you today that what Project Yoga Richmond was, and what it is becoming, is an organization that will always put the needs of the community first. But wisdom informs us that when a Phoenix is reborn it is no longer the same Phoenix that disappeared into the flames, just as the being that emerges from the chrysalis is not the same as the one who went in. PYR also is in a state of transformation. Change is necessary.

The original location that housed this organization has moved into new, loving hands. The community outreach programs have shifted. And it is my goal to expand our focus BEYOND yoga asana. PYR became much more than hosting pop up events, studio classes and the like. We are a community resource that worked to cultivate Mindfulness with each offering.

I’ll close with this: our humanity craves what is familiar. We search for sameness, and fear change. But change is the fuel of progress, and in order to progress we must accept change.

The Project Yoga Richmond you once knew is in a state of becoming. I ask for your patience and continued support. My vision is clear and my intention is to serve with humility.

Hi. I’m J Miles and I’m one of the original co-founders of Project Yoga Richmond. I have something that I want to share with you.

When you last saw me it was at the VMFA - it was a beautiful day and the news had broken that PYR was shutting down operations. The organization that you all knew and loved was ceasing to exist.

But that was only the beginning of the story, not the end.

In order to continue our mission of service to this amazing community, PYR had to become dormant in order to heal itself, grow, and begin a process of change.

From the very start, I envisioned an organization comprised of people who love yoga, who love connection, and those who wish to live in right relationship with each other to bring more healing into this world. For the past four months, I have been working together with a great team of individuals to re-imagine an organization dedicated to creating more self-awareness, more compassion, and more mindfulness throughout Richmond and beyond. My dream is that as a community we start to act more collectively with each other to further the original mission of Project Yoga Richmond.

You should know that PYR is rising from the ashes in 2023. In order to implement the necessary changes, I need your support. This community has always been the backbone of this organization, and we can only continue to serve by coming together.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Donate! It is your donations that allow PYR to do its work. The donation button is live on the website (projectyogarichmond.org) and we need your contribution.

2. Spread the word! Let folks know that PYR is alive and well. We are simply in our chrysalis form.

3. Participate! We are working hard to curate new community events, as well as rekindle a few old ones. I want to see you there.

4. Talk to me! I’m inviting dialogue. Tell me what you loved about the way things were and how we might create more mindfulness and compassion going forward.

With the intent being to create more mindful collaborative efforts among the great organizations in our city, I know that we can continue what we’ve started, and do even more in the future.

💫 ENERGY MERIDIANS AND YOGA💫

When energy pathways in our bodies get blocked, our physical, mental and emotional health suffers. Yogic practices stimulate and clear these meridian pathways so we can feel open and full of vitality. This builds our resiliency to stress and change, and helps us live our authentic radiance!

In this one-day workshop, you will learn some of the main energy meridians in the body (according to traditional Chinese medicine), their corresponding elements and organs, associated emotions, and how yoga postures invite them into balance. Allow your life force energy (prana, or qi/chi) to flow freely to promote healing and for optimal well-being!

Full and partial scholarships available!
