Meet our Director of Programs! | Millie Rocha is a familiar face around CrossOver. She’s served in eight roles at CrossOver since 2012—first as a Dental Assistant, followed by roles in patient intake, medication access, accounting, case management, and TIPS Program Manager, until her appointment as Director of Programs last March. Her journey through these different areas in CrossOver gives her valuable insight into the intricacies of CrossOver’s operations.

As Director of Programs, Millie is responsible for overseeing CrossOver’s Dental and Eye clinics and Community Pharmacy. “There are a lot of rules and regulations that we need to follow, lots of protocols, SOPs, and training materials that need to be created or updated.” said Millie. These need to be communicated to and carried about by staff and volunteers on a continual basis.

It’s a lot to keep up with, but Millie isn’t daunted. “I love checklists, I love processes, and I love whiteboards,” she says, gesturing at the multiple whiteboards covered in multi-colored lists in her office. “I don’t just want to know the rules, I want to understand why they’re there, then I can help my managers and employees do their jobs well.” And that means our patients are cared for and the CrossOver team is cared for.

CrossOver is thankful for Millie’s empathetic leadership, her curiosity and care, and her work to continue to improve our programs!

Meet our Practice Manager! | Joan Chappell is a fresh face to CrossOver, having just joined the CrossOver team in October 2025, but she brings decades of experience in dental and medical management settings. As CrossOver’s Practice Manager, she sees the key points of her role as growing our capacity for patient care, improving our clinic efficiency, and supporting our care teams.

“Every day is different—the only thing that is consistent is greeting everyone in the morning and saying thank you at the end of the day!” Joan beamed. In between there are a lot of meetings, there’s a lot of laughter, a real sense of teamwork, and a welcoming spirit. "People are here because they want to be here. And when our clients walk out, often their outlook is at least a little bit lighter. That’s what keeps me coming back every day.”

We're so thankful for Joan’s energy and expertise during this season of growth and change at CrossOver!

Thanks to St. Matts RVA for hosting so many of our CrossOver patient families for their second annual Three Kings' Day celebration this past weekend! Our patient families enjoyed cute crafts, fun activities, delicious snacks, and photo-ops with the '3 Kings' themselves! Children received gifts chosen with them in mind, and much fun was had by all.

We're so grateful to the parishioners at St. Matts who put in so much thought, time, and effort into making this event warm, welcoming, and culturally connecting. We're still smiling from all the fun!

If you've driven by one of our clinics in the evenings recently, you may have noticed that CrossOver is shining a little brighter these days! We didn't spot any elves decking our halls for the season, but we are grateful to the folks at Dominion Lightworks for brightening our buildings for the holidays!

"We found out that CrossOver had been caring for one of our long-time employees as they've dealt with a health crisis, and we wanted a way to say thanks for what you've done for him," said Dominion Lightworks Operations Director James Zogran. "We wanted to do something that we knew would impart our thanks for what CrossOver has done for our team member, and for the whole community. This is something we're good at and we're happy to offer to brighten up the season for your staff and patients!"

The Zograns are life-long Richmonders and like so many of our staff and volunteers at CrossOver, make it a practice both in business and in life, to give back to their community. While they're certainly not in it for the recognition, CrossOver is so grateful to James and Sam, and the whole Dominion Lightworks team for responding with such generosity and lighting up our clinics.

Meet Bezawit Mulatu, medical researcher and emergency medical technician (EMT)

At a young age, Mulatu, who grew up in Ethiopia, had to deal with a health care system ill-equipped for special needs, like her own nearsightedness. Now living in Richmond, she is a 2024 Governor’s Award honoree and the recipient of the Bonner Center’s Engage for Change Leadership award, while also working in area refugee and immigrant care, joining with CrossOver Ministry, a clinic for uninsured patients, to build linguistic and procedural infrastructure for refugee and immigrant patients.

“Bezawit is not just a high achiever. She is a systems builder who transforms lived experience into public good,” says co-worker Hana Bedada. “Every project she leads fills a gap in systems that overlook the most vulnerable. Bezawit’s leadership is not theoretical or future facing. It is already reshaping how Virginia cares, educates and responds.” And she is only 23.
