*Content warning: sexual assault*

"The Denim Day campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a r**e conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence."

Fact: Sexual assault does occur in marriages and relationships, consent is required whether people are in a relationship or not! As a reminder.. consent is always the presence of a YES that is enthusiastic, informed, affirmative, ongoing, and non-incapacitated.

It's Sexual Assault Awareness month! On Mondays of this month we will be debunking common myths about sexual assault.

Myth: Survivors will be hysterical and cry all the time

Fact: Everyone responds differently to trauma- some may laugh, some may cry, and others may not show any emotions. There are no "cookie cutter" responses for survivors. What's important is that we validate whatever they are feeling, honor their wishes, and help get them connected to resources that they are interested in.
