VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center Celebrating 60 years of being First in Second Chances. View our social media guidelines: https://www.vcuhealth.org/patients-and-visitors/social-media-guidelines

As one of the first abdominal transplant programs in the country, the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center has been home to many important firsts, including Virginia’s first kidney transplant and Virginia’s first liver transplant. Hume-Lee also opened one of the first tissue-typing labs in the world, and established Virginia’s first vascular access program. This tradition of medical innovation and success continues today, as the Hume-Lee Transplant Center consistently ranks among the nation's leading transplant programs while remaining at the forefront of transplant care through the use of advanced therapeutic and surgical techniques.

After living with pancreatitis since 1999 and facing a mere 10% chance of survival, Edith Kelly endured years of debilitating pain and uncertainty. When she was finally referred to Dr. Levy and the TP-IAT team, she spent a year preparing for the procedure that would ultimately save her life.

With the unwavering support of her care team and her husband, she underwent total pancreatectomy with autologous islet cell transplantation (TP-IAT). Edith recalled that her recovery was smoother than she expected, thanks in part to the compassionate guidance of Lyndy, TP-IAT Senior Nurse Coordinator.

“Lyndy was there every step of the way. She helped us with the necessary paperwork to ensure my husband could be with me through the length of my recovery.”

Today, Edith is living a life she once thought impossible—free from the fear of another painful flare-up. She’s traveled, made memories, and was present for the birth of her newest grandchild.

Her message to others considering TP-IAT is clear: “Everyone should be able to live a life that is pain-free. You are worth it!!!”

We’re honored to share Edith’s story and celebrate the strength, resilience, and hope that TP-IAT can bring. 💜💜💜

November is Native American Heritage Month. 🧡 Within the donation and transplantation ecosystem, Native communities have long demonstrated a tradition of giving, resilience, and strength. Yet they continue to face disparities in access to healthcare and transplantation.

Native Americans and Alaska Natives currently make up approximately 2% of the U.S. population, with over 900 Native Americans/Alaska Natives on the national organ transplant waiting list. We believe in honoring these communities by elevating their stories, fostering respectful partnerships, and ensuring equitable representation in our shared mission to save lives.

Today, let’s our Transplant Surgical Technologists!

If you’ve ever wondered who sets up the operating room for a transplant procedure, it’s the surgical technologist — the skilled professional who ensures every instrument, all supplies, and each piece of equipment is ready before the first incision.

From maintaining a sterile field to anticipating the surgeon’s needs during critical moments, surgical techs play an essential role in every successful surgery. Their precision, preparation, and teamwork help save lives every single day.

They’re at the heart of every successful transplant. They often know what the surgeon needs before it’s even said. Standing on the surgeon’s right side, they’re the doctor’s literal “right hand,” passing instruments and assisting seamlessly to keep the procedure running smoothly.

Thank you to our Hume-Lee team members for your dedication, expertise and care!
