Virginia Quality Healthcare Network Ensuring that all Virginians Have Access to Quality Healthcare

The Virginia Quality HealthCare Network began as a small group of patient groups and professional healthcare associations who worked together to share information about healthcare issues and initiatives. Over the past decade this small informal group has grown into a statewide Network of over 50 health associations, patient advocacy groups and professional associations who share a common goal of ensuring all Virginians have quality treatment and medication.

Early detection of cancer is critical in the war against cancer, and we need to ensure that current policies keep up with the latest advancements in cutting-edge technology. We were pleased to see that S. 1873, which has the potential to transform how cancer is screened and detected, has support of over half of the U.S. Senate. Senator Mark Warner and Tim Kaine we urge you to support this legislation!

As we round the corner from Reconvene Session here in Virginia we turn to the federal level and an exciting announcement that will help create better access to health care for Cancer patients in Virginias. Catching cancer early saves lives, and it is essential that those who are most vulnerable – America’s seniors – can access the latest screening technology. This is why House Republicans Healthy Future Task Force is joining with leaders across the aisle to call for passage of the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act. By passing this important legislation, Congress has an opportunity to ensure that older Americans get all the benefits of MCED without delay. We thank our leaders in Congress on the Healthy Future Task Force and the over 230 Members of Congress who have cosponsored this bipartisan, bicameral bill, for prioritizing cancer prevention and innovations in cancer screening.

As Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging is preparing to celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we are very happy to welcome Amy Strite, MSW, LCSW as our fifth Executive Director. Michelle Johnson, Chair of the Senior Connections Board of Directors announced the selection of Ms. Strite, noting that she is “a tenured leader in the local not-for-profit arena; well experienced and well engaged in strategic mission-driven organizations, ranging from child welfare to family services and incorporated best practices into each role.”
Amy states, “This is a rare and exceptional opportunity in my career. Senior Connections is a purpose driven organization and has changed under the visionary leadership of the late Dr. Thelma Bland Watson, the narrative of what it means to be a senior and to age well. The advances of the Agency in tandem with the challenges faced by older residents in central Virginia, as well as the opportunities ahead, give me an immense feeling of anticipation and optimism. I look forward to the upcoming 50th anniversary and teaming with the staff, board and community partners to both celebrate and plan for the future.”

“To diagnose cancer sooner — Today, we know cancer as a disease we often diagnose too late. We must increase access to existing ways to screen for cancer, and support patients through the process of diagnosis. We can also greatly expand the cancers we can screen for. Five years ago, detecting many cancers at once through blood tests was a dream. Now new technologies and rigorous clinical trials could put this within our reach. Detecting and diagnosing cancers earlier means there may be more effective treatment options.”

President Joe Biden

Excited to see so much energy and effort surrounding this important issue! The Medicare Multi-Cancer Screening Coverage Act is an essential step in achieving this shared vision. Thanks to both for your leadership! Senator Mark Warner Congressman Morgan Griffith
