Today is Certified Nurses Day! 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ Each year, we highlight the importance of specialty nursing certifications and the commitment they represent. The day recognizes nurses who pursue and maintain advanced credentials in their field, demonstrating a dedication to professionalism, clinical excellence, and high-quality patient care.

In honor of this, we are celebrating the nurses on our team who have recently earned their Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) credentials! The CRRN certification reflects specialized expertise in rehabilitation nursing and a strong commitment to supporting individuals recovering from illness, injury, or chronic conditions. They play a big role in helping our patients regain independence, rebuild strength, and navigate the recovery process. We are grateful for each one of you and the difference you make at Sheltering Arms Institute!

We loved being part of the Adaptive Sports Festival this weekend, hosted by our friends at Sportable - Richmond Adaptive Sports & Recreation! Team members Cristin, Cait and Elisabeth represented Sheltering Arms Institute at the festival, the largest adaptive sports and recreation expo on the East Coast. 🥍🏒🏀 Individuals with disabilities from near and far had the opportunity to explore a wide range of accessible athletic and recreational activities.

Thank you to Cait and Elisabeth for helping reduce barriers to participation in sports and promoting inclusive recreation in our community!

🎶 March is also Music Therapy Month! 🎶 At Sheltering Arms Institute, music therapy is more than just making music—it’s an evidence-based approach that supports healing. Through rhythm, melody, and movement, music can help patients work toward cognitive, speech and language, and sensorimotor goals while also providing emotional and social support. It’s a powerful form of nonverbal expression that can build confidence, connection, and motivation throughout the rehab journey.

Audrey, our incredible music therapist, explains how music is processed in the brain and why music therapy can be such a powerful tool for several diagnoses! 🎵 This program is made possible by generous donors to Sheltering Arms Foundation. Community Engagement Specialists Jess and Wendy recently attended the Unite Us conference, bringing together healthcare providers and community organizations focused on improving how people access health and social services. While at the conference, they also had the opportunity to meet Virginia’s new Commissioner of Health, Dr. B. Cameron Webb!

Unite Us is a coordinated care platform that helps organizations connect individuals with resources like food assistance, transportation, housing support, and other essential services. Our Community Engagement team uses this platform to link patients with trusted community resources after they graduate from rehab—helping make the transition back to the community smoother and setting them up for long-term success.

We’re proud of our community engagement team—one of our Margin of Excellence programs made possible through philanthropic support to Sheltering Arms Foundation—for continuing to build partnerships and learning new ways to strengthen the communities we serve.
