I would NEVER… live in a world without doula support. Here are some of your doulas’ no-nos.

10/31/2025

These are my clients’ due dates vs when their babies were actually born. What an important visual!

As doulas, we don’t put a lot of stock in your “due date”. We know that these dates are just an estimate, and babies come whenever they are ready!

Most due dates are calculated using Naegele’s rule. The problem with this calculation is that it assumes all women have a 28 day cycle and ovulate on day 14 of their cycle. Did you also know that Naegele didn’t specify whether you should count from the first day or the last day of your period? Does this information surprise you? Drop your due date and your baby’s birth date in the comments!! When did your baby decide to be born?

Do you know the difference between an OB and a midwife? Do you know if your birth location has tubs you can labor in? Do you know your chosen hospital’s policies on eating and drinking in labor? Do you know what decisions you have regarding routine newborn care? Do you know what questions to even ask?

You may not know what your options are, what is available to you, and what you can ask for. I often say, especially when it comes to new parents “you don’t know what you don’t know”. And that’s where a doula comes in! A doula can help educate you and empower you to make the decisions that feel best for you, your baby, and your family.

All. The. Babies.

I’ve been fairly quiet on here for a while, and that’s mostly because I’ve been BUSY! Over the last calendar year, I’ve supported 44 families as they welcomed their babies earth side. It has been an honor to enter your homes and your birth caves and be a part of your stories. Thank you!!

Clients, thank you for trusting me and inviting me into such a sacred space. My team at , thank you for supporting me so I can best support my clients. To my husband, thanks for holding down the fort (sometimes for days on end), and encouraging me to continue this work that I love. To my kiddos, thanks for always listening to me talk about placentas and welcoming me home with open arms. And to the rest of my village, thank you for filling in gaps in childcare, bringing us meals when we are at capacity, and for not rolling your eyes when the conversation inevitably ends up birth-related.

Cue the Oscar music 🎶

Laboring at home 💕

What are some benefits to laboring at home?

Home is a comfortable space where you feel safe. This translates to more oxytocin, which helps labor to progress!

When you spend more time at home, you lower the chances of unnecessary interventions. If you go to the hospital too early, you may be “put on the clock”. This is arbitrary, and sometimes all your labor needs is time. Especially if you are having your first baby, be prepared for things to take awhile.

Avoid being sent back home because you aren’t in labor or it’s too early! This is a big one. As a doula, I can help determine if it’s an appropriate time to move to your birth location. I can meet you at home, see how you move through and cope with contractions. This gives me some insight into what phase of labor you’re in, if it’s time to go, or if we need to try some other tactics at home.

More room and comfy surfaces to get into all the positions! No one telling you not to eat or drink! The list goes on!!

✨Client Testimonial✨
“Haley was so wonderful to work with throughout my whole pregnancy, birth and postpartum journey. I felt so comfortable talking with her from the start, because not only is she friendly, warm, funny, and helpful but made me feel like no question was unimportant. She is very knowledgable about all things pregnancy and birth, and I loved that she brought perspectives from both her medical background as well as her personal birth stories and experiences with her own children. When the plan I had for my birth began to change towards the end of my pregnancy, Haley remained calm, helpful, and checked in on both my mental and physical health. She helped problem solve options with my husband and I, and when my birth plan became a scheduled C-section, she remained by our sides to help in ways that, though different than what I imagined, were still invaluable. My husband now tells everyone that he can not imagine going through our birth without Haley, and we are forever grateful that she was a part of our experience!”

Water is such a powerful tool in labor. It can distract you, provide pain relief, and help you cope with contractions. The tub is often referred to as “nature’s epidural”. Especially when used during transition, it can help you relax enough to allow that last bit of cervix melt away. Did you use the tub or shower in your labor? What was your experience?

Ina May Gaskin, often described as “the mother of authentic midwifery”, is a strong and wise woman. In my first pregnancy, I read her books and tried to really sit in her wisdom and learn to trust my body in the process. “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth” is one of the titles in my lending library. Hit me up if it’s one you would like to borrow!

C-section mothers are brave. They sacrifice their plans and their bodies, allowing a surgeon to cut through 7 different layers of tissue. They open their bodies and heart, expanding and giving everything for their child.

This mama worked so very hard to bring her son earthside. She faced many obstacles in her labor, and she handled each one with courage and openness. What a beautiful way to enter parenthood!

Having a baby is hard work. Parenting is hard work. It often isn’t what we expect, but whoa, what an awesome ride! After a long journey, this baby landed on his mom’s chest, and the emotion in the room was palpable.
