Please hold off on cutting down trees this time of year. There are so many critters that are gearing up to have little ones, and sometimes that dead tree that is an eyesore to you is the perfect home for so many of them.

December or January tends to be best for tree removal. In the winter, you should not have to worry about nesting birds and small mammals in trees. The only animals to truly look out for are tree roosting bats and cavity nesters like flying squirrels. Weβd recommend just being mindful of these individuals during tree work, especially when removing dead or hollow trees. We highly recommend wearing gloves during tree work to prevent accidental interactions with tree roosting bats. It also may be best to pick a warmer week in the winter months (ideally above 40 degrees). If the tree removal does disturb one of the cavity nesters, they should be able to find another safe roost in warmer weather.
I hope that information helps! We are always here if you do find disturbed or injured wildlife during the clearing process. Feel free to give us a call at 540-942-9453 any day of the week from 9am to 5pm (we also have an after-hours emergency line if needed!).
Sincerely,
Lilly
