Today marks two years since I lost all useful hearing in my right ear from Sudden Onset Sensorineural Hearing Loss. They never really could say what it was from, but recent ENT visits have said it was likely a fluke from my immune system being over stimulated by the flu shot and awakening the virus that causes Bell's Palsy, and instead if it causing facial paralysis, it attacked my hearing.
Today I celebrate how I have adapted, overcome, and kicked ass since this devastation happened to me.
My lesson for you? Be kind to those with hidden disabilities. They are all around us. From the woman with endometriosis, to the man with migraines, to the lady with one sided deafness.
Please be especially kind to your older relatives or friends that have hearing loss. You think it's frustrating for you having to repeat yourself? Think of the person that cannot understand you.. PLEASE have patience with them. They are doing their best.
If you ever experience sudden hearing loss GO TO THE DR IMMEDIATELY. if you can't get in with an ENT, then go to an emergency room. You need to be put on a high dose of prednisone ASAP if you hope to regain your hearing, and even with treatment only 1/3 regain all of their hearing back.
Here's to me, pushing myself with yoga and jogging to regain my balance and retrain my vestibular system while I was suffering from vertigo, for putting myself out there in noisy situations where I have to read lips, for not letting this slow me down (even though hearing loss fatigue is SO REAL).This has made me stronger in ways I never knew I could be.
Cheers to me, and cheers to all of you that have a hidden disability. I am so proud of you.
Love,
Krystal
