I haven’t posted here in awhile, but the truth of this post prompted me to do so. This is why childbirth education classes are so important! Also, appointments with a midwife often last much longer, offering a stronger relational bond during labor and more education.

Parenting a baby rarely looks like it does on TV or in the movies… babies needs lots of attention, touch, and care, and that’s ok. 💜

These parenting practices aren't radical - they are the biological norm for our species.

But they don't make money. Separating mothers and babies makes money. So that's what we are taught to believe is the norm.

I'm here to put a spanner in those works and educate and support as many parents as I can on what biologically normal infant sleep, feeding and behaviour looks like and empower them to parent responsively and instinctually.

If you do any of these things with your child, you are not alone, nor are you doing anything wrong. These are all normal, natural and extremely common parenting practices all over the world.

Guys! This is amazing!

YOU CAN DO BIG THINGS! Like push a 14 lb 7 oz baby out naturally with NO VAGINAL TEARING! 🙌🏽💪🏽🤰🏻 4 hours of labor, 15 mins of pushing. ✨Rockstar✨

You rock Coastal Midwifery!

“A few days ago I had the pleasure of attending the beautiful HOME BIRTH of this BIG man.

His mama saw a Licensed midwife throughout her pregnancy and prepared physically and emotionally for the birth of her second baby.

During her 4 hour long labor she rocked, walked and danced her baby down, she instinctively pushed in the standing position for 15 mins and delivered all..... are you ready for it.... 14 lbs 7oz of him! She was also able to deliver this chunky baby with no tears.

After doing their research this family chose a midwife to guide them through their pregnancy and birth and were able to have an amazing experience in the comfort of their own home.

This baby stayed with his mama on her chest breastfed within the first hour. Mama and baby are doing amazing.

People are capable of delivering their baby, even when they are big! Way to go mama!”

Yes, this ancient treat can help prepare your body for labor!

Yes, this ancient treat can help prepare your body for labor!

Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we don’t know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively.

A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were:
🔸 Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital
🔸 Had a significantly higher rate of intact membranes
🔸 Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction)
🔸 And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor

A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had:
🔸 Greater cervical dilatation at admission
🔸 Higher success rates of labor induction when needed

A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth.

Any type of dates work! The ‘dose’ is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my “herbal bliss bites” (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. Amazingly, they also haven’t been shown to be a problem for blood sugar.

Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? Tag her in the comments below so she can learn about the power of this ancient medicine!

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK

MyBirth Lactation Pro Tips from Sara Krivanec, CPD, CLC

Breastfeeding Tip #1: SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT

Skin-to-skin on the birthing person, all babies transition through the same states in the first hour of birth:
•Birth cry •Crawling/Sliding
•Relaxation. •Familiarization
•Awakening •Suckling
•Activity •Sleeping
•Rest. (Widström et al)

Insist that your baby spend their early hours getting skin-to-skin time with the birthing/nursing parent. Look for these transition signs and support your baby as they latch for the first time. These undisturbed hours have been proven to result in higher rates of nursing establishment, and longer durations.
