If you’re not feeling merry and bright this holiday season, you’re not alone. The holidays can be a joyful time, but they can also bring anxiety and emotional strain. Knowing the symptoms of depression can help you recognize when you’re feeling more than seasonal stress.

If you’re struggling with depression, these tips from the NAMI may help you manage it better so you can enjoy holiday festivities:

🎯 Be aware of your personal triggers.
✍️ Try journaling or writing a gratitude list to shift your perspective.
📅 Do your best to avoid overscheduling – it’s okay to say no.
🛑 Set boundaries with people who make you feel negative emotions.
🧘 Make time for relaxation, deep breathing or meditation to help ease stress.
🍷 Drink in moderation as alcohol can amplify negative emotions.

Across our broader HCA Healthcare system of care, we are part of an integrated network of mental health and wellness facilities, comprising over 50 inpatient facilities and more than 200 outpatient programs across 15 states. Early detection can save lives.

After three bouts of pancreatitis over the last eight years, 37-year-old Chesterfield mom Brenda Minor took matters into her own hands. That determination led her to a specialized screening program at Richmond Gastroenterology Associates that may have saved her life.

Dr. Matthew Fasullo launched the High-Risk Pancreas Center at Richmond Gastroenterology Associates, part of HCA Virginia Health System, last year. It’s the only program in the region that specializes in early pancreatic cancer detection.

After the screening, Brenda was diagnosed with a pre-cancerous lesion on her pancreas. Soon after, the tumor was successfully removed at Johnston-Willis Hospital, part of Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Hospitals.

“It’s a blessing. If they hadn’t caught that this early, it could be completely different,” Brenda said. “My outcome could be completely different. I’m grateful for every day that someone took to take the extra step to check on my health. But also, it shows the power of advocating for yourself.”

Chest pain feels different for everyone — it can be a dull ache or a sudden, sharp stabbing sensation. Regardless of how it feels, it’s important to take chest pain seriously. If the discomfort sticks around, it could be a sign of a more serious, potentially life-threatening condition like a heart attack or a blood clot.

Last year across our broader HCA Healthcare network, our emergency rooms saw nearly 838,000 visits related to cardiac complaints. You know your body better than anyone. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. And if your chest pain is severe or accompanied by any of the symptoms shown here, seek emergency care immediately. At HCA Virginia, we are a grateful for so much this Thanksgiving, including each other. The people at our hospitals aren’t simply coworkers — they are a family. This is underscored by the fact that LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg, part of LewisGale Regional Health System, has not one but two colleagues who chose to be living organ donors.

Over the summer, Rebecca Hooper, an RN in the ICU, donated part of her liver to our hospital’s beloved volunteer coordinator, Rhonda Whaling, who was in liver failure. Both Rebecca and Rhonda are doing well and recently returned to work!

Palliative care nurse Nicole Thompson may have been her colleagues’ biggest cheerleader through the entire experience! You see, last year, Nicole donated a kidney to Barry Daniel, a local pastor in need of a transplant. Today, he’s back on his feet, sharing the gospel and his personal story.

These courageous acts say a lot about who our colleagues are as people and who we are as a hospital system and community. It’s no secret that we excel in providing high quality service and care for our patients. What’s become abundantly clear is that we are equally selfless in caring for each other.

As HCA Healthcare co-founder Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr. has been quoted, “Bricks and mortar do not make a hospital. People do.”
