A update from Rx Partnership! October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Rx Partnership's pharmacy intern, Shawna Keane from VCU School of Pharmacy, has been working on a great project related to mental health.

Shawna's project is called ""Behavioral Health on a Budget: How Free Clinics Can Optimize Existing Formularies for Mental Health."" By focusing on medications clinics already have on-hand, her project will help develop ways for providers to better support patients' mental health needs using existing resources. Because when 1 in 5 adults faces a mental health condition, access shouldn't depend on cost.

Thank you for the great work, Shawna! πŸ‘ πŸ’―

This Halloween, make sure your kids know the difference between treats and tricks! One of the biggest safety concerns is mistaking medicine for candy. 🍭

Here are some tips from Rx Partnership that can help your family enjoy a Happy (and safe!) Halloween:

πŸ’Š Store all medicines out of sight and reach, so they don't get accidentally mistaken for candy.
πŸ“² Save the Poison Control Number in your phone just in case: 1-800-222-1222. If you suspect a poisoning, call right away!
πŸŽƒ Inspect all trick-or-treating candy before allowing your kids to eat it. Discard any suspicious treats that might be harmful.

If you're curious about how similar some medicines and candies look, check out these side-by-side comparisons from Poison Control:

For Health Literacy Month, we're sharing some helpful information that explains the difference between Brand and Generic medications! πŸ’Š ℹ️

Brand-Name Drugs are medications sold by a drug company under a specific name or trademark that is protected by a patent. A drug patent is typically good for 20 years after the drug's invention.

A Generic Drug is a medication with the exact same active ingredient as its brand-name drug, that is taken the same way and offers the same effect. It does not need to contain the same inactive ingredients as the name-brand product, and it can only be sold after the brand-name drug's patent expires. Generic drugs are not exclusive to one manufacturer.

Part of health literacy is ensuring that people have the information they need in order to make informed decisions about their health. Rx Partnership is committed to working with our partners to help increase health literacy! πŸ™Œ
