COVID-19 Lockdowns Linked to Early Myopic Shift

Chinese study suggests reduced outdoor exposure during the pandemic may have disrupted early emmetropization, particularly in children under age three.

The prevalence of pre-myopia reached its peak in all age groups in 2020 (80.3% in the one-year-old group, and exceeding 94% in the two- to six-year-old groups), showing a significant increase compared to 2018 to 2019.

"Even among infants under one year old, who have limited exposure to near work, the significant SE decline suggests that subtle changes in visual stimuli and lighting conditions during confinement may disrupt normal refractive development," the researchers wrote. "Additionally, confined spaces may increase peripheral hyperopic defocus, further promoting myopic shifts. Previous studies have shown that natural, full-spectrum light inhibits excessive axial elongation, while low-intensity indoor lighting accelerates it, potentially contributing to the observed refractive changes.”

What do healthy oil glands in your eyelids really look like—and does it change with age or contact lens wear?

A new study used artificial intelligence to analyze thousands of eye images and found that Meibomian gland appearance (which helps keep your eyes comfortable) varies by age and ethnicity, but not by s*x or contact lens use. This research could help eye doctors better understand what’s “normal” and spot early signs of dry eye disease.

New research using virtual reality and brain scans has found a kind of “internal compass” in the brain that helps us stay oriented while moving around. These brain areas keep track of direction, even when the environment changes. It’s a fascinating peek into how our minds help us find our way in the world!

When was your last eye exam? If it’s been a while, here’s why it matters: Regular eye exams are the only way to detect glaucoma early.

Glaucoma often has no symptoms until vision loss starts to set in. But catching it early means treatment can help you preserve your sight. And if you have a close family member with glaucoma, you’re 10 times more likely to get it.

Don’t wait for symptoms. A simple eye exam could protect your vision for years to come.
