While cognitive therapy works on healing the past by talking about it and finding new solutions to recurring problems through a change in behavior or a shift in perspective, somatic therapy works on healing the past by allowing feelings in the body related to these events to show up and be released. The body therefore becomes the guide, the therapist and the healer.

When we’re in a bad place emotionally or spiritually, our first instinct is to disconnect. A vacation will make the problems disappear. Drinking will numb the pain. Binging on Netflix will silence the mind. All of these coping mechanisms might help temporarily, but the underlining pain will re-emerge once the high has worn off.

We continue to feel disconnected from
ourselves, our soul, when we avoid healing. As the saying goes, running away from your problems is a race you’ll never win. I challenge you to run towards your problems. Find the courage to feel everything that you used to run from. Reconnect to release.

As someone who has had migraines off and on for years, they can be incredibly painful and unbearable; taking you down for hours or days. Migraines can be triggered by several different factors. For me it has been stress or grief, that starts as tension in the back in neck and then goes off like a bomb in my temple. Migraines had been a source of frustration and ruined events, interfering with my wellbeing. I didn’t want to depend on medications or miss out on any other important moments. I found though, that working with the pain can bring healing.

The body and mind are deeply connected, and as humans we do everything possible to ignore, avoid, and numb anything that is uncomfortable. That is until our bodies start screaming at us to do something. Headaches are complicated because they can be triggered by our diet, lack of movement or environmental factors..or could be something deeper. As a sufferer, get curious. When you begin to notice pain or other sensations within your body, bring your attention there and describe what you feel. This is where we begin to find the root or source of pain.

Whatever has happened in your past, good or bad, is apart of your unique story. Every experience has shaped who are you, however it doesn’t have to define you. The past might be messy and full of pain but it’s important to look at those moments and understand how to heal from it, so you don’t keep recreating the same story. The moment I began to confront my truth, grief and my past failures, I felt relieved. I could then start rewriting and creating a story I was proud of, instead of letting the limiting beliefs and emotional wounds control who I thought I was. Without healing, I was reliving the same patterns. I lacked boundaries and self trust, had insecure attachments, and constantly felt anxious and irritable. So the option was learn and grow, or repeat. What has happened to you does not have to be the end of the story. You have the ability to heal, grow, and live the life that you envision.

A large part of somatic therapy is inviting movement back to the body to help ignite healing. When the body goes through a traumatic event it holds onto the memory even if the mind has buried it. The body remembers everything. Being in survival mode, people often disconnect from the body. So when we start to move the body, we begin to move that stagnant energy and emotions. It begins to tell your body that you’re not in survival mode, calming your nervous system.

After a session, most people feel so much more fluid and open in their body, craving more movement. In a session your body might even tell you what kind of movement it needs such as more stretching, swimming, or yoga.

Growth requires patience and grace. Growth also requires setting boundaries, feeling the pain, and letting go. This can be intense and challenging. Letting go of old patterns and beliefs is a journey, but through the ups and downs comes great transformation. Even the smallest action, like taking a moment for yourself to breath or move, will help you keep moving forward.

Friendly reminder: You are not your past, nor does it define you. Don’t let the past hold you back from living your truth. Some of the best days are still ahead. 🤍
