Marshall James Ney, DMD, FAAOP We are always welcoming new patients and we would love to have you as part of our dental family. Please explore our web site to learn more about us.

Dr. Ney graduated from Highland High School in Fort Thomas, KY in 1965. He attended Centre College and graduated from the University of Kentucky followed by a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in 1975 from the University of Louisville. He became interested in temporomandibular joint disorder / temporomandibular joint (TMD/TMJ) headache and neck pain in 1982. Since then, he has centered his learning experiences on the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ/TMD and headache. Dr. Ney is a Fellow of the Academy of Oralfacial Pain, an organization that keeps its members up to date on TMJ/TMD, headache, and neck pain. The membership of the academy is composed of dentists, physicians, psychologists, and physicial Therapists. He is also a charter member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. The membership include dentists, physicians, psychologists. The academy helps us stay current with sleep as related to pain and dental appliances that manage sleep apnea. TMD/TMJ headaches and neck and jaw pain involve much more then treating a bad bite. While your bite is important, other areas such as disrupted sleep, weak neck muscles, neck pain, posture, and oral habits should also be considered. (You would be surprised how many people chew their tongue or lip.) Having a clear understanding of these disciplines is vital to understanding why a patient has pain and knowing what to do about it. Interestingly, most headaches involve Myofascial Pain. Because he himself suffered from headaches over a period of seven years, Dr. Ney understands the problem both as a patient and as a doctor. This is important because he knows how disrupting the pain can be to a patient’s life, relationships, and job. On a personal level, Dr. Ney has three sons. Marsh, the oldest, is an MD and doing his residency in physical medicine at Chapel Hill North Carolina. His second son, William, graduated from Transylvania University and computer skills at the Lexington Library and is married to a medical school graduate and resident in psychiatry at the University of Kentucky. Robert, his third son, also graduated from Transylvania University and is at UK getting an accounting degree. Dr. Ney and his minister began the non-profit Saint Andrews Retirement Community in Richmond, Kentucky in 1990 with a bequest of Stephen F. McCready to First Presbyterian Church in honor of his wife, Isabel Bennett McCready. Since then, St. Andrews has grown into a campus of 75 condominiums, 73 assisted living apartments, and a nursing home with 50 beds. The nursing home is one of only a handful of nursing homes to achieve a 5 Star rating from the state of Kentucky nursing home inspectors. No matter what his endeavors, Dr. Ney's goal is perfection. In terms of headaches, he simply believes that you deserve to live pain-free!

Hello Golden Retriever owners…are you tired of vacuuming coats of hair off the floor everyday ?!

This is not a long term study and to be sure it’s not double blind.

About 2 months ago we decided we were poisoning our English Cream Golden witand started looking for a better dog food than the over cooked dog food made from scraps of food off the slaughter house floor. (Goggle dog food)

Any rate we looked at Farmers Dog for our 80lb Golden and figured out that we were going to spend as much for Tucker as we would for us…so we decided that we would have to make our own healthy food.

We bought frozen carrots, spinach, some cheap meat on sale at Kroger’s,bone broth
oranges that were almost out of date, bananas from Sam’s club (they are very very green.). Same with berries almost out of date, 1slice of cheese cut up, and 1/2 cup of the Ims dog food ( I’m up for suggestions on this dog food) any other table food.

Now to the shedding issue…I used to fill up our Shark Vacuum daily…then every other day and now 3 days and the shark was only 1/3 full!!
Is this because of the diet? I don’t know but if it is, a dream come true! (Except for Farmers Dog and Shark)!

I’ll keep you posted and I am interested if anyone else has comments wise or otherwise.
Thanks, Jim

General Dentistry: I have been practicing general dentistry for over 35 years and I still love what I do. One of the most important things we do is explain what we are doing, why we are doing it and and what we expect from it.

Explanations could be using models (we have a closet full of models of teeth, skulls and jaws and sleep apnea appliances) We may, however chose to draw you a colored picture of what is wrong and what we want to do.

We do not rush and we do not double book. If you are in pain, you will be seen that same day. If the office is closed, the office answering machine will give you my personal cell phone number.

If you have questions about insurance, talk to Linda. She is amazing as to how much information (and money) she can get out of insurance companies.

I have the best hygienist (Hannah) and assistant (Maria) anyone could ask for. Maria is actually a dentist from the Philippines.
Junie, our receptionist has actually worked here longer than me and is really my boss?!

Make an appointment we all love our patients.

Headache: Dr. Ney has treated patients for headaches related to jaw and neck muscles for over 30 years. 85% of all headache is muscle. Today the name for a bad headache is a Migraine...even though only 12% of all headaches are true migraine and as we said 85% are caused by muscle! Kind of like when Xerox was the only copy machine, we used to say give me a Xerox of this when today we say " give me a copy of this".
Also, sleep plays a very very important roll in managing headache. Headache patients all have trouble sleeping. They usually awaken several times per night.

Sleep Apnea: Dr. Ney made his first sleep apnea appliance in 1985 and has been treating sleep apnea and sleep disorders since then. The oral appliance is not the first treatment you should try, but if you cannot use the CPAP machine, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends the Oral Appliance.
