We hear a lot about narcissism now in counseling and general conversation.
The Mental Health Definition of a Narcissist:
• Grandiose sense of self-importance and
uniqueness
• Preoccupation with fantasies of success,
power, beauty, or ideal love
• Strong need for admiration and validation
• Sense of entitlement and expectation of
special treatment
• Interpersonal exploitation
• Marked lack of empathy for others
• Envy of others or belief that others envy them
• Arrogant, haughty attitudes or behaviors
• Triangulation of people
• Must be in control and receive credit
• They manipulate- but won’t admit it
• Entitlement and belief they are superior
• They cause significant problems in most all
relationships they are involved in (family,
work, church, and they can’t maintain the
same relationships/friendships)
This is the real definition of a Narcissist. The term is being overused today; however, we are certified to diagnose personality disorders, narcissists, GAD, sexuality problems, behavioral patterns and more, which are all mental health problems that insurance has declared as part of healthcare coverage. Let that sink in!! So, it is real. People are walking around everywhere with these issues, and they cause issues for others in:
Workplace ✅
Family ✅
Marriage ✅
Friendships✅
The problem is….. It is extremely challenging for a narcissist to admit ANYTHING. So, seldom do they get help or ever attempt to change because they do not think they need it.
All you can do is become aware and set boundaries.
So…… Learn, grow, and conquer!!
