Mississippi State Medical Association

Mississippi State Medical Association We are the physicians who care for Mississippi.

The Mississippi State Medical Association is the largest physician advocacy organization in Mississippi, representing nearly 5,000 physicians, residents and medical students. For over 150 years, MSMA has served the state's physicians as a trusted health policy leader and professional development resource. We advocate for our members and their patients at the state and federal levels, provide information on healthcare legislation and regulatory changes, offer professional development and continuing medical education opportunities, and promote campaigns for public health.

Asking about mental health is more than a screening step — it reduces stigma, helps patients feel heard, and provides early access to care. Physicians are trusted voices, and by raising the question in every setting, you reinforce that mental health is an essential part of whole-person care.

Together, Mississippi physicians can normalize mental health conversations and improve outcomes for patients, families, and communities.

Mental health screening doesn’t have to be complicated. Physicians can use validated, evidence-based tools — such as PHQ-9 (depression), GAD-7 (anxiety), or AUDIT-C (alcohol use) — to guide decisions. When time is limited, simple clinical judgment and a question like “How have you been coping emotionally?” can make the difference between silence and treatment.

1 in 5 Mississippians experience a mental illness each year. Untreated depression and anxiety worsen outcomes for diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease — increasing costs and straining families.

Evidence shows that early detection improves recovery, lowers complications, and reduces hospitalization. Even a brief conversation or use of a validated tool can change the trajectory of a patient’s life.

Mental health is as important as blood pressure, glucose, or weight. The Mississippi State Medical Association encourages all physicians to incorporate mental health conversations into every patient encounter — annual checkups, follow-ups, and specialty visits. Asking one simple question can open the door to lifesaving care. Physical health + mental health = whole health.
