Happy second week of National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitian Day! Week 2 focuses on finding nutrition advice backed by science.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics describes a dietitian as: “Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts with a minimum of a graduate degree from an accredited dietetics program and who completed a supervised practice requirement, passed a national exam and continue professional development throughout their careers. There also are specialty credentials in areas of gerontological nutrition (CSG), sports dietetics (CSSD), pediatric nutrition (CSP), renal nutrition (CSR) and oncology nutrition (CSO).”
An RDN is different from a nutritionist; a nutritionist may have a background in nutrition but has not completed supervised practice requirements and passed the nation exam.

Meet with a dietitian to receive personalized nutrition information and goals. A dietitian meets patients where they are at based on the changes they are willing to make. Nutrition information changes over time because science is ever-evolving, this can feel confusing and even frustrating at times. A dietitian keeps up on current nutrition research and can dig through latest advice and how this impacts recommendations. Dietitians are also trained in motivational interviewing which involves finding what motivates a person and what barriers they may face in meeting their goals.
