Everyone talks about getting a kiss under the mistletoe around the Christmas season, but Norse stories tell a very interesting story involving mistletoe!
Baldur was one of the most beloved of all the Norse gods, but one night he had a terrible dream that he would meet a violent end.
Freya (or F***g, Baldur’s mother) afraid of what this dream would mean, exacted a promise from every living thing that they would never harm Baldur. However, the one living thing she forgot about was the humble Mistletoe.
Afterwards, the gods made a great game of throwing things at Baldur and watching him remain uninjured.
Among these gods, was the trickster god Loki, who knew that Mistletoe was the one thing that could hurt Baldur. So he attached mistletoe to the end of an arrow and helped one of the other gods take the shot. Baldur was killed and his soul was taken to the realm of the dead.
Freya begged Hel (goddess of the realm of the dead) to release Baldur, and Hel agreed on the condition that all creation mourn Baldur.
And indeed, all creation did mourn, except for one. Loki had use his shapeshifting skills to transform into a giantess that would not shed a single tear. And so, Baldur was to remain as dead.
Loki did not go unpunished: he was chained to a rock where a serpent would drip poison onto him. They say that Loki’s faithful wife keeps a cup underneath the serpent to catch the poison. But when she goes to empty the cup: the poison falls on Loki, and he trembles to cause terrible earthquakes.
