🌿 Expressive Arts Therapy Supervision Groups – Fall Openings! 🌿

In our recent group, we explored pendulating and titrating pain through a nature-based expressive arts process β€” learning to move gently between discomfort and soothing with creativity and compassion.

✨ Our session began with a guided visualization and grounding meditation, inviting each participant to connect with a soothing resource from nature β€” the warmth of the sun, the softness of moss, or the coolness of water (led by Dr. Elizabeth Warson). From there, supervisees practiced mindful pendulation, shifting attention between areas of tension and comfort while visualizing color and dilution to represent softening and transformation.

🎨 During our experiential art process (led by Sarah Newton Penston), we used natural items as paintbrushes β€” spiky seed pods to express pain, feathers and leaves to symbolize soothing (for ex.). Using mixed media, participants explored texture, transparency, and color layering as metaphors for regulation and healing. Through this practice, participants noticed how creative engagement and bilateral movement supported somatic awareness, emotional regulation, and integration.

πŸͺΆ Reflections from the group highlighted how nature-based materials can ground and expand emotional understanding β€” helping us embody both pain and relief within the same creative flow.

We also shared a rich discussion on how AI tools can ethically support expressive arts therapy β€” offering reflective prompts, organizing creative documentation, and deepening supervision practices while keeping the work human-centered and relational.

🌱 We currently offer three Expressive Arts Therapy Supervision Groups, with new openings this fall! This is an affordable ($65/group) and supportive way to fulfill your Expressive Arts Therapy certification requirements, connect with a vibrant community, and grow your clinical and creative practice.
