Honoring those who served our nation with courage and commitment. Many of Washington’s farmers and ranchers are veterans who continue to serve their communities long after their military service ends.

Today and every day, we thank them for their sacrifice, their dedication, and their lasting impact on the land and the people they feed. 🇺🇸

After harvest, wheat is stored in grain bins across the state. These bins protect the grain from moisture and pests, keeping it dry and clean until it’s ready to move. Once elevators and grain handlers receive the wheat, it’s loaded into rail cars or trucks and sent to ports along the Snake and Columbia Rivers, where barges carry it to export terminals and, eventually, dinner tables around the world.

More than 80 years ago, farmers in Hooper were seeding wheat with determination and grit. This photo from the 1940s shows how much farming has evolved, but the same commitment to feeding families and caring for the land still runs deep in Washington’s wheat country.

Doug Rosman is back in the field seeding winter wheat. This crop gets its start in the fall, sprouting and growing just a few inches tall before the cold sets in. Once winter arrives, it goes dormant above ground, holding steady until spring warmth brings it back to life. From planting to harvest takes about 10 to 11 months, with combines rolling through in July and August. It is a long process that starts now to ensure a strong crop next summer.
