Riverside County’s 2026 measles case total has increased to five after two young children from the same household in Southwest Riverside County have been confirmed to have measles. They were not vaccinated and were exposed while traveling out of state in an area with known measles transmission. They did not attend daycare, school or other group settings. Both children are recovering at home.

New cases serve as an important reminder that measles is more than just a rash and fever, it can have lasting effects on the immune system. “Immune amnesia” caused by measles can weaken the body’s ability to fight off other infections for months or even years after recovery.

Vaccination remains the best protection. If you are planning to travel to an area with known measles spread, talk with your healthcare provider. Measles vaccine can be given as early as 6 months of age!

This week is Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, and it gives us the perfect chance to highlight the work – big, small, and microscopic – that our staff does day in and day out. Behind every test result and diagnosis, a public health laboratory has a team of dedicated scientists and technologists who keep our community safe through precision, expertise and teamwork.

From ensuring accurate results to supporting disease surveillance and public health preparedness, their contributions often happen behind the scenes but make a visible difference every day. We’re proud to celebrate their commitment, curiosity, and excellence this week – and every week.

It’s National Home Visitation Week, which means it’s the perfect time to highlight the extraordinary work our Public Health team does! They provide assistance, education and resources to promote healthy child development by supporting parents and caregivers.

These programs help our youngest Riverside County residents, and the lasting impact is measured in years, decades – and of course – graduation ceremonies!

Today is the start of National Infant Immunization Week! This week showcases the importance of getting your baby’s immunizations on time to ensure they can live a full and long life, knowing they're protected from preventable, potentially devastating diseases such as measles, polio and RSV.
In recent year’s trends, pediatricians have witnessed a concerning decline in children—especially infants under two—who have received their routine vaccinations on schedule. Remember, vaccines aren’t new. They are safe, rigorously tested and proven to be effective in preventing disease.
: Talk to your child’s pediatrician or visit one of our upcoming vaccine clinics. All clinics accept walk-in appointments. Cost and eligibility vary. For more information, call (951) 358-7125 or visit www.ruhealth.org/vaccineclinics.
