T4: The Upper Back Vertebra That Supports Posture & Rib Movement
T4 sits in the upper thoracic spine, just below T3, and plays an important role in stabilizing your upper back and supporting rib and shoulder function.
Why T4 matters:
✨ Supports upright posture and thoracic stability
✨ Anchors the fourth rib, contributing to breathing mechanics
✨ Assists with rotation and extension of the upper back
✨ Protects the T4 nerve root
The T4 nerve contributes to:
• Sensation across the upper back and chest
• Rib cage movement
• Upper thoracic posture
When T4 isn’t moving or functioning well, you may notice:
• Upper back stiffness
• Tightness between the shoulder blades
• Difficulty with deep breaths
• Rounded shoulders or slouched posture
Healthy T4 function helps you breathe better, move freely, and maintain strong, balanced posture.
Strong posture is built one segment at a time—T4 is part of the foundation.
