Millennial Brushing Habits, Bad Breath, and Tooth decay!

A new study into the dental hygiene habits of 2,000 Americans found three in ten millennials studied only brush their teeth once a day. Results also showed the average millennial surveyed has gone more than two days at a time without brushing their teeth at least once.

Plaque (bacterial colonies) cling to teeth with sugars they make specific for this attachment. They eat what you eat or what passes over their colonies. The end products of their metabolism are sulfur rich and acidic. Leading to bad breath as well as tooth decay. The plaques if left on for a while wil mineralize and become tartar/calculus which cannot be removed just by brushing where plaque can.

We recommend brushing twice a day to remove plaque before it becomes calculus and visiting the dentist regularly to keep your smile healthy and bright!

What happens during a root canal?

A root canal is a procedure to save a tooth that's inflamed with infection and or trauma. The procedure starts with the diagnosis and x rays. Once the patient agrees to save to the tooth, we numb the area up. We access the nerve chamber through the top of the tooth by creating a small hole into the nerve chamber. Then by using a series of files, we file to the end of the root to clean out the tissue inside. We flush with bleach and file till everything is clean, rinse with water, dry with air and paper points. We seal the chamber with root canal cement and rubber points.

The tooth should eventually go back to feeling like the rest but it can take 2-8 weeks. Pain meds and antibiotics are commonly prescribed during this period.

The tooth should never be chewed on until the crown is placed.

Ever bite hard and experience sharp pain on a tooth? This could be due to a crack through the tooth into the nerve chamber. As you chew the tooth will flex about the crack and rip on the never inside. If pain goes away quick (within seconds of release), the treatment is a crown. If the condition goes untreated, crack widens, and the pain becomes more constant then a root canal and crown will need to be done or an extraction depending on how deep the crack goes into the tooth. It's beneficial to catch this quick as soon as it happens to avoid costly treatment and pain!
