🤰🏻BABY’S POSITION IN RELATION TO BETTER, LESS PAINFUL LABORS 👇🏼
Did you know the position your baby is in when you are in labor makes a BIG difference in your labor and birth experience, and can affect the level of pain in contractions?
This video is excellent in showing why back labor happens (if you’ve had it, you know 🥴🫠😖) and how to help prevent it!
The “AP” (anterior) baby position is considered best because the baby’s back faces the front of the mother’s abdomen, which leads to a smaller diameter as it passes through the pelvis, a better molding of the head, and a more effective “wiggling” motion to help it descend.
In contrast, a “posterior” (OP) or “sunny side up” position, where the baby faces the mother’s abdomen, can lead to a longer, more painful labor because the head is angled larger and the baby’s spine is not curled, making it harder to move through the pelvis. This is a big factor in back labor which can be so much more painful and cause much longer labor and pushing phase.
How to encourage baby in the best position
•when lounging on a couch or a chair, always try to sit straight up and forward, not leaning back as much as possible.
• in your third trimester, you can start doing forward inversions for 30 seconds at a time (just YouTube forward inversion stretch third trimester)
• lots of walking and stretching and some deep squats if you can to help lengthen those uterine muscles and keep your pelvic area nice and strong
Tell us below - did you have a sunny side up baby or an AP baby? What was your experience?
