A small line in a segregated 1962 newspaper column led me down an unexpected path of research this week.

The October 4, 1962 edition of The Roanoke Leader noted that my father, Wilkie Clark, attended a “Southern Leadership Conference” in Birmingham, September 25–28.

After verifying the dates, I confirmed that the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) held its Sixth Annual Convention in Birmingham during those exact dates — a convention attended and addressed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The alignment of dates and location places my father at that historic gathering.

I do not claim more than the documentation supports. But I do share this discovery with humility and gratitude.

Sometimes history hides in a single line of newsprint.

Archival documentation available at:

Sometimes history hides in the margins.

I share this discovery with both tremendous humility and immense gratitude. I thank God for revealing to me daily the magnitude of man that my late father, Wilkie Clark truly was.
