Welcome to Rebecca, one of our new flight nurses at Life-Guard 12. She joins our team with previous flight and critical care ground transport experience. In 2017, she took an Intro to Flight Nursing class that was taught by one of our flight nurses and had her first Life-Guard ride along. Glad to have you back here now as one of Life-Guard flight nurses!

We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic helicopter crash involving our colleagues at Vanderbilt. While we may not cross paths in our everyday lives, we all share the same mission — to serve, to heal, and to help others in their time of need. Our thoughts are with the crew, their families, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.

Our flight crew had the opportunity to teach a Life-Guard Airway Class at WVEMS Mini EMS Symposium. The hands on class focused on airway management with use of SALAD manakin, rapid sequence intubations, surgical crics, and pediatric airways. ALS providers were able to further practice these valuable skills while BLS providers gained better insight on airway management with being able to support ALS interventions.

Today, at the Carilion HeartNet Cardiovascular conference, Franklin County Public Safety Captain Becky Ayers and Life-Guard Director Susan Rivers presented the prehospital side of a Field STEMI case at Waid Park in June. Our patient’s interventional cardiologist that day, Dr. Mirza, also shared information about the cardiac catheterization and hospital course. But the best part of it all was the surprise reunion with the patient whose life was saved that day. Franklin County Public Safety, Franklin County Fire Department, and Callaway Fire Department were acknowledged with a nomination for the Life-Guard Horizon Award for their above and beyond efforts that day, finding creative ways to reach and treat a STEMI patient a mile down a trail with 200 ft elevation (among many other challenges). Strong work by all, including everyone who helped the patient in the hospital, cardiac rehab, and on the home front. It really does take a village!
