Big feelings are a normal part of growing up. How kids learn to cope with them matters. When emotions run high, screens can feel like an easy fix, but they can make it harder for kids to build healthy coping skills over time. This blog from Screenagers shares two simple ways to help kids process emotions without screens:

• Name and understand their feelings
• Lean on connection and support

A powerful example of prevention in action is happening right here in our community.

The 2026 Virginia Teacher of the Year is bringing conversations about substance use, va**ng, and addiction directly into the classroom, helping students better understand the real risks and how to make informed, healthy choices.

At Partnership for Community Wellness, we believe these conversations matter. Early education and open dialogue can make a lasting difference in the lives of young people and our entire community.

With the warmer weather settling into Roanoke, it’s the perfect time to put the phones down and get outside. ☀️ Our community offers so many ways for families to stay active and connected, from hiking local trails and kayaking on the river to visiting the zoo, parks, and playgrounds around the valley. Spending time outdoors is a great way to support both physical and mental wellness.

What are some ways you’re keeping your family active and off their phones this season? 🌿📱➡️🚫

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to learn, reflect, and start conversations about healthy choices and prevention. 💬

Not everyone should drink alcohol. It is safest to avoid alcohol completely if you:
• Are recovering from alcohol use disorder or have difficulty controlling how much you drink
• Are pregnant or might be pregnant
• Are younger than 21

Understanding what counts as one drink can also help people make informed decisions:
• 5 fl oz of wine, about 12% alcohol
• 1.5 fl oz shot of liquor, about 40% alcohol
• 12 fl oz beer, about 5% alcohol

Alcohol awareness starts with education, open conversations, and access to supportive resources.

If you are looking for information, tools, or ways to start the conversation, explore our Substance Misuse Prevention Resources at https://thepcw.org/prevention-resources or visit www.addictionpolicy.org/post/april-is-alcohol-awareness-month

Alex Siple of The Wild Way was featured on WDBJ 7, highlighting the powerful work being done right here in Roanoke.

The Wild Way is a local nonprofit providing expedition-based outdoor experiences for girls of all backgrounds, experience levels, and incomes. Through time in nature, mentorship, and adventure, they help build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills that last a lifetime.

At Partnership for Community Wellness, we know prevention and mental wellness are strengthened when young people have access to positive, empowering experiences. We’re grateful for community partners like The Wild Way who are helping shape a healthier future for our region.

A look at some of the main challenges kids face in making friends nowadays.

Spring Break is here ☀️ It’s the perfect time to unplug and connect as a family. Join our Spring Break Phone Break Challenge and turn “Less Screen Time, More Family Time” into a fun goal for the week. 📵 How many screen free hours can your family log together? Try setting aside 1 to 3 hours each day where everyone puts their phones away and spends time connecting.

Ideas for your phone free time:
• Go outside and explore
• Cook a meal together
• Play games or take a walk
• Have a device free dinner

At the end of Spring Break, add up your hours and see how much time your family spent truly unplugged and present together. Even small breaks from screens can lead to stronger relationships, better conversations, and meaningful memories.
