Piedmont Community Services is working with a 37-year-old female who is actively working to maintain her recovery. She was recently hired for a job and is preparing to begin work, but needs non-slip, restaurant-appropriate shoes in order to start.

This opportunity is an important step forward. Employment will provide structure, purpose, and income—key supports in maintaining stability and continued recovery. It also moves her closer toward long-term goals, including stable housing and reunification with her children.

Without appropriate work shoes, she may be unable to begin employment, which increases the risk of lost income, setbacks in recovery, and potential re-engagement with higher levels of care or system involvement.

Requested item:
-Non-slip, restaurant-style shoes (boot style preferred, size 8.5–9)

Providing this item would help her begin working, support her independence, and reinforce the progress she is working hard to maintain. Any assistance would make a meaningful difference at this critical moment.

Neighbors helping neighbors looks like this!

Last week, we picked up 8 refrigerators and 5 stoves from our friends at The Park Oak Grove in Roanoke. This comes in addition to 2 refrigerators and 3 stoves they donated earlier this month.

We’re also grateful to The Community Fellowship in Martinsville for contributing the use of their moving truck, and to Ebenezer Lutheran Church for providing storage space for donated items.

Practical support matters. A refrigerator or stove can help stabilize a household, reduce stress, and meet a real need at the right time.

Piedmont Community Services is working with a 32-year-old man who was recently discharged from the hospital and is continuing his recovery at home. He lives independently but currently lacks basic living room furniture, limiting his ability to rest comfortably and spend time in a safe, stable environment.

Having a couch, chair, coffee table, and lamp would provide a place for him to sit, rest, and engage in daily activities like reading or watching television in a comfortable and functional space. Without these items, he is more likely to spend time outside of the home, which can increase exposure to unstable environments and impact his recovery.

Providing these essentials would support his healing and help reduce the risk of hospital readmission, behavioral health decline, and increased reliance on crisis-level services. It also helps maintain stability in the home and supports his ability to remain independent.

When a 17-year-old and her family moved into their new apartment, it was a fresh start.
