Unhealthy diets are by far our greatest risk factor for disease and death. However, physical activity is important for our health and longevity and should be encouraged as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

Population studies have found a correlation between regular aerobic exercise and decreased risk of at least 35 different diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

Physical activity can help lower inflammation, as well as decrease DNA damage and facilitate DNA repair. A meta-analysis of cohort studies of middle-aged and older individuals, with follow-ups as long as 20 years, found that exercising adults were more likely to age successfully than sedentary individuals.

Exercise may also improve cognition, enhance mood, and generally improve quality of life. The evidence supporting the overall health benefits of physical activity are overwhelming.

Exercise is such powerful medicine that researchers at Stanford and the London School found that exercise may work as well as drugs for patients with coronary heart disease, heart failure, and pre-diabetes––and even better than some medications for stroke.

Just like any medicine, though, might exercise have an upper limit for benefitting our health and longevity? I cover that in the video “How Much Exercise Is Too Much?” at https://see.nf/3ZM4H6h

Walking is among the safest of physical activities, averaging only about one injury per thousand hours. So if you are just getting started with lifestyle changes, consider walking. For even more health benefits, take a walk in a wooded park for the added benefits of boosting your anticancer immunity.

Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication or exercise routine.

Have you been having a hard time sticking to an easy pace? If you can't breathe through your nose during training, you are likely training too hard during the early base periods. Most people think better breathing means taking bigger breaths, but one of my favorite books, "The Oxygen Advantage" teaches the opposite. To breathe right, you first learn to breathe light. Light, quiet nasal breathing helps you: Deliver oxygen more efficiently, Strengthen your diaphragm, Calm your nervous system,, Move and perform with less effort
How to practice: 1. Breathe through your nose 2. Keep the breath so soft that you can't feel your nose hairs move 3. Aim for gentle, comfortable “air hunger," 3. Let your breath become almost invisible for 5 minutes.
Small, light breaths create big changes in how you feel, move, and recover. Athletes can integrate this into their warm-up.

If the idea of breathing through your nose all day or while working out gives you a panic attack, book a bodywork session and ask to discuss breath.

Time for a Recovery Week!
You've been working hard! In a strong endurance plan, every 4th week drops to about 50% of your normal volume. This isn’t random. It’s how your body consolidates the work you’ve been doing so you actually get stronger instead of just accumulating fatigue. Recovery weeks aren’t a break from training, they are training! The lighter load: Prevents burnout, Reduces injury risk, Helps tissues adapt and rebuild, Resets your nervous system, and locks in the gains from the previous 3 weeks.
Busy people, parents, weekend warriors — you’re already carrying plenty of life stress. A planned recovery week keeps your training sustainable and your progress moving forward.
Pull back to move ahead. Your body will thank you for it!
Don't forget to book your recovery massage!

Let me know if you are interested in snow cancellations as they become available or if you have an existing apt this week you would like to reschedule.

CAUTION: While many people are out and about, the Grandin area parking and walkways remain snowy. There is a snow mound between the street parking and our sidewalks. Parking is additionally available "Behind the Coop" in the lot off Westover. Be aware that you may need to walk the snowy sidewalks around to the front of the office. Our neighbors have not shoveled.
Please only book if you are confident in your ability to travel/walk in snow/ice.

Stay well!

Parking and neighborhood access remain poor. Our neighbors have not shoveled and sidewalks/alleys are snowy with ice potential. Street parking is narrow/exposed. You have to traverse a large snow-mound to get to the sidewalks. Parking is best "Behind the Coop" in the lot off Westover. Then walk the snowy sidewalks around to the front of the office.
Please only book if you are confident in your ability to travel/walk in snow/ice.

If you want to enjoy your weekend adventures — not just survive them — Block 2 is your foundation.
But here’s the big trap: don’t go too hard too early.
Early intensity feels exciting, but it leads to burnout and nagging injuries fast. Slow, steady, repeatable work is what actually builds durability. And this isn’t just for athletes.
Parents: You’re lifting, carrying, chasing, and moving all day. Strength endurance helps you stay strong from morning to bedtime.
Weekend warriors: This is where you build the engine and resilience that make long rides, hikes, and runs feel fun again.
Resist the rush. Build the base.
Grandparents: Keeping up with energetic grandkids takes balance, stability, and all‑day stamina. This block builds exactly that.
Your future self will thank you.
If you have overdone it, or want to stay ahead of fatigue, Book you Bodywork session today!
