On December 17, 1872, Roanoke was mapped out and lots were offered for sale.

The plat of Roanoke was composed of 15 blocks and was bounded by Main, Front, Ann and Pleasant Streets. Two years later, (in 1874), Roanoke officially became a "Village" in the State of Illinois. Building began immediately in Roanoke and by the time the railroad was complete the population had increased to three hundred. Henry Frantz put up the first building after the village was laid out, and John Frantz and Jacob Engle also opened stores. The first doctor in the town was Dr. John, who also served several terms as coroner. Fauber and Hall first bought grain in Roanoke, although they never had an elevator. They also dealt in coal. The lumberyard was conducted by Doc Miller but soon after passed into the hands of Phillip Moore, who was one of the pioneers in business life in the vicinity. On August 15, 1874, the first election was held for the purpose of electing six trustees for the Village of Roanoke. To this day, the Village has continually filled those six positions.

๐Ÿ’™ This Is What Community Looks Like ๐Ÿ’™

We want to take a moment to say thank you, not just to our incredible Village team, but also to the residents who take the time to notice, acknowledge, and celebrate the good happenings in Roanoke.

This morning, with temperatures around 14 degrees and strong winds, members of our Public Works Department were out doing what they always do, serving our community with pride, grit, and dedication. Leaf pickup in these conditions isnโ€™t easy, but the job still gets done because this team cares deeply about Roanoke and the people who call it home.

Weโ€™re especially grateful to residents who speak up and share positive messages like this one. Those words matter. They lift spirits, strengthen connections, and remind us that Roanoke is more than a place, itโ€™s a community that looks out for one another.

To our Village employees: thank you for showing up every day, in all conditions, with a servantโ€™s heart.

To our residents: thank you for your encouragement, support, and appreciation.

This mutual respect and pride is what makes Roanoke special. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‚

Throwback Thursday โ€“ Roanoke Edition ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

Before big-box stores and online shopping, places like Loreneโ€™s Dress Shop were the heartbeat of a small farming town like Roanoke. Located on Main Street, this wasnโ€™t just a business, it was a gathering place, a conversation starter, and a source of pride for generations of local families.

In farming communities, local shops mattered. They provided more than goods; they offered trust, relationships, and a sense of belonging. You didnโ€™t just shop, you caught up on news, shared stories, and supported neighbors who were building their dreams right alongside yours.

These storefronts helped define Roanokeโ€™s identity. They supported farm families, employed local residents, and kept Main Street vibrant through changing seasons and decades. The legacy of businesses like Loreneโ€™s reminds us how deeply connected commerce, community, and care were and still are in our town.

If you remember shopping here, walking past this storefront, or hearing stories from family members, weโ€™d love to hear them. Thatโ€™s the history that truly keeps Roanoke strong. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’™ WHERE AM I WEDNESDAY โ€“ ROANOKE EDITION ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ‘€

One of the best parts of living in Roanoke is the little details we pass every day without even realizing how special they are. This weekly challenge is all about slowing down, looking closer, and celebrating the places, spaces, and stories that quietly shape our village. Every photo you see was taken right here in Roanoke, tucked into a spot filled with history, creativity, and local pride. Letโ€™s see who knows Roanoke not just by nameโ€ฆ but by heart. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ How to Play:
๐Ÿ” Study the photos and clues carefully, every image matters.
๐Ÿงฉ Some clues point to history, others to design, texture, or subtle details hiding in plain sight.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Drop your best guess in the comments (feel free to explain your reasoning!).

โณ Not quite right? Donโ€™t worry!
More clues are coming later today for incorrect guesses, and the final reveal will happen right here, later today. Stay tuned, keep guessing, and enjoy the hunt! ๐ŸŽฏโœจ

Letโ€™s Go Roanoke!

๐Ÿ” Clue #1: โฌœ Circles repeat where most people never look. Look up, the pattern tells a story older than drywall and drop ceilings.

๐Ÿ‚ A Community Update from the Village of Roanoke ๐Ÿ‚

With the late fall we experienced, many leaves held on longer than usual and didnโ€™t fall when they typically do. Then, with an early winter snow, cleanup became more challenging for residents and our Public Works team alike.
Thanks to the unusually warmer temperatures in the upcoming forecast, we now have a great opportunity to finish strong together.

๐Ÿš› Final Leaf Pickup
๐Ÿ—“ Monday, December 22, 2025
โฐ Please rake all leaves to the curb by 7:00 AM

Village employees will make one final pass through town to collect remaining leaves. This extra effort helps keep our streets clear, improves drainage, and prepares our community for winter weather ahead.

This is a great example of Roanoke looking out for one another, our team adjusting schedules to serve the community, and residents doing their part to help everything run smoothly. If you see our Public Works crew out working, please join us in thanking them for their dedication and service.

Together, weโ€™re taking advantage of this window and showing what makes Roanoke such a special place to call home. ๐Ÿ’›
