At Good Samaritan, we walk with families through grief every single day. We remind them that grief has no timeline and that love does not disappear when someone we cherish is gone. Over this past year, we have lived that truth ourselves. One year ago today, our Good Sam family experienced a loss that is still deeply felt as our dear friend and colleague, Scotti Hartman, left this world.

It’s hard to believe a full year has passed. In many ways, it still feels like yesterday that her laughter echoed through our halls and her larger-than-life spirit lifted everyone around her. Scotti had a rare gift for bringing joy wherever she went. Her quick wit, contagious laugh and deep compassion made people feel seen, valued and loved. Those who knew her understood immediately what a remarkable person she was. Those who worked beside her experienced the passion she carried for this mission and the people we serve each day.

We still hear Scotti’s voice in moments that call for courage. We still see her influence in the way our team cares for one another and for our community. The imprint she left on this organization continues to guide us forward. And the truth we share with families every day remains just as real for us: Grief is simply love that continues.

Compassion leaves a lasting mark. Every day, members of the Good Samaritan team go above and beyond to care for patients and support families during some of life’s most difficult moments. When families choose to honor those caregivers through a Good Sam Hero nomination, it speaks volumes about the impact of that care.

The Good Sam Hero recognition celebrates team members who have shown extraordinary compassion and created meaningful connections with the families they serve. Each honoree receives a special badge that symbolizes both this recognition and the powerful bonds formed through their dedication.

Please join us in celebrating our February 2026 Good Sam Heroes:
- Tammy Jaffe
- Nicole Winfield
- Erin McCoy
- Cindy Andrews-Preece
- Savanna Moore

Their kindness, commitment, and heart for others remind us that even the smallest acts of care can make an incredible difference in the lives of many. Thank you for being heroes to the families we serve.

Last week, Good Sam's Board of Directors gathered for their first meeting of the year, and we couldn't be more energized for what lies ahead.

Pictured here (left to right) are the dedicated volunteer leaders who guide Good Sam's mission of compassionate, community-centered care across southwest Virginia:
Scott Berglund | Nelson Harris | Sue Ranson, Chair | Donna Angle | Gwen Glasby | Sarah Glass, newest board member from Lynchburg | Linda Manns | Beth Scott | Susan Frantz | Troy Henderson | Clifford (Kipper) Nottingham, M.D.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to the board members not pictured, whose dedication and service are equally integral to the work we do:
Mary Baron | Carolyn Clark, M.D. | Janet Crawford, Secretary/Treasurer | Sherry Davidson | Robyn Smith Ellis | Christine Lockhart

This remarkable group of individuals volunteers their time, expertise, and heart to ensure Good Sam remains the only non-profit, community-based hospice serving southwest Virginia, guided always by mission over margin. We are grateful for their leadership as we step into a new year of service.
