Back in shop class, I always remember my teacher telling us to measure twice and cut once.

But if my shop teacher saw what we can do with modern dentistry, I think he would be blown away.

When placing an implant, the perfect location in all three dimensions is extremely important. This ensures the final crown looks good, while also making it easier to clean and maintain. Additionally, it helps us avoid vital structures. These include structures such as the sinuses and nerves.

How is this done?

With two scans, an intra-oral 3D scan of the mouth, which allows us to see everything above the surface, and a CBCT scan that shows us what is below the surface. I can work with my lab to create a surgical guide that ensures the implant is placed at the ideal depth, angle, and location, thereby increasing the crown's chances of long-term success.

In the photo, you can see a custom-made surgical guide for an implant. This small tool can significantly enhance the success of a dental implant.

Every year, my wife and I have a debate about when we will have "peak weekend" in the fall.

What is "peak weekend"? This is the weekend when the leaves are the most beautiful, but are still on the trees for the most part. During this time, we always enjoy taking the family on a hike or driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway.
