Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DATE: March 12, 2026

Avian Influenza Positive Birds in Crawford County

Crawford County Health Department has received notice from the Illinois Department of Public Health that birds collected in Crawford County tested positive for avian influenza A (H5). Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing sporadic outbreaks in poultry and carries a risk of infecting other animals (such as dairy cows) and even humans.

While the current public health risk is low, Crawford County Health Department is monitoring the situation carefully and working with local and state partners to assess and respond to humans with animal exposures.

The best way to prevent bird flu is to avoid sources of exposure whenever possible. People should avoid direct contact with sick or dead wild birds, poultry, or other animals. If you must have direct/close contact with sick or dead wild birds, poultry, or other animals, including dairy cows, wear recommended personal protective equipment (CDC).

Other recommendations for prevention include:

Do not consume or touch raw milk, especially from animals with confirmed or suspected avian influenza. Choose pasteurized milk and products made with pasteurized milk.
Cook poultry, eggs, and beef to safe internal temperature to kill bacteria and viruses.
