Community Support Information

We have seen such a heartwarming response from the people of Crawford County stepping up to help each other out during this government shutdown. We understand the overwhelming sense of need to help your neighbors and we want to help you do that safely. We have had some questions and concerns from the community that we would like to address and share some important information to help keep everyone safe.

How can you help?

Volunteer:

Food banks and community kitchens are often in need of volunteers, especially with the anticipated increase due to the government shutdown.

Donate:

Support local food establishments: collect donations and order food from local establishments for those in need or purchase “pay it forward” meals that can be redeemed at a later time.

Donate to a local food bank

Organize a Food Drive

Donate to a Free Store or Blessing Box

Buy groceries for someone in need

Beware of scammers; do not donate money unless you know it is a legitimate organization.

If you are planning to provide prepared food to the community, partner with a local church, restaurant, or business that has a certified kitchen and a licensed food manager. If you are wanting to plan an event with prepared food, please give us a call and we can help you provide food in a safe way.

Choosing Foods to Donate:

Shelf-stable, nonperishable items

Canned fruits, vegetables, soups

Unopened packages of peanut butter, cereal, or pastas

Donation Items to Avoid:

Home-canned or homemade foods

Foods in glass jars (breakage risk)

Perishable foods (meat, dairy, eggs) unless the site can safely refrigerate them

Expired infant formula

Check each item carefully:

No bulging, dented, rusted, or leaking cans

No torn packaging or open seals

No unlabeled products

Following a court order today, the federal government will fund only half of SNAP benefits in November. The federal government’s decision to fund reduced benefits will make it significantly more complicated for states to issue the funds, which will delay November SNAP benefits to households by days or weeks.

Benefits left on cards from previous months can still be used, but new benefits will be less than in prior months and will be delayed by the federal government.

IDHS is exploring how payments will work in Illinois and will keep customers updated on this evolving situation.
