Learn more about the faces that care for our community! This month is another double-feature: Family Healthcare Clinic's Triage Nurses, Angela Cooney and Jobina Smith:
Angela always knew that she wanted a profession that involved helping people, and initially she thought that it would be as a Lawyer. She actually began trying to get her degree before she realized that occupation might not help people int he same way that she had envisioned, so she decided to become a Nurse. She has now been a nurse for 28 years, and has been with RCH for 18. Angela has been a med/surg floor nurse for most of her career, and most recently made the transition to being a triage nurse for our Family Healthcare Clinic for the last 2 years.
The most fulfilling or memorable parts of Angela’s job are when she speaks to a patient on the phone, learns more about their current symptoms, and helps advocate for their best outcome. Angela finds that being a triage nurse is her opportunity to properly educate patients to get the care they need as soon as they need it, rather than being a barrier with scheduling. For instance, she recalls speaking to a woman over the phone once and the patient was describing chest pain, but didn’t want to take the time to go to the ED because she felt she had “too much to do before Christmas”. Angela insisted that the patient take the time to seek care in our ED, and as it turned out, the patient was in need of immediate care, and eventually a bypass.
Angela’s favorite holiday is Christmas, and her favorite food is a traditional Chicago-style pizza when she is back in the city, as her family used to live there before coming to the Rochelle community.

Jobina made the decision to become a nurse after her first child was born with multiple medical conditions, and they spent most of his childhood in and out of hospitals. Jobina saw so many great nurses take care of her child, and she did a lot of nursing him herself that she thought she should make it her profession. She has been an RN since 2007, and has experience in different aspects of the field such med/surg, hospice, and even case management. Being in case management, and working on more of the clerical side of care made her miss being more medical, so she decided to make the change to our Triage Nurse for FHC and she has
been in the position for 3 years now.
Jobina finds that doing process improvements and jumping in to help with clinical needs are what make her job feel fulfilling. She likes finding ways to make processes in the clinics to be the most effective and timely.
Fun facts about Jobina is that she actually also has her Bachelor’s degree in Christian Studies, and is in a christian band through her church. Her favorite holiday is Halloween because her birthday is also in October, and her favorite meal would be anything anyone else cooks for her that they find joy in cooking.

One thing both Angela and Jobina have in common besides their job title and being RNs, is that their time away from work is very family-oriented. They are either working to keep the house in order, going to or doing activities with their kids,
or just spending time with them.
RCH is fortunate to have two caring and helpful triage nurses answering patients’ messages, questions, and helping our Family Healthcare Clinic!
