HeartWorks

HeartWorks HeartWorks is a nonprofit creating outcomes & opportunities for the 1 in 100 born with CHD. Together, we're building a better future for CHD.

We advance research, lead clinical trials, and offer ways to support our mission. Together, WE BUILD HEARTS. HeartWorks was created in June, 2020 to accelerate and expand the product development pioneered by the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), founded at Mayo Clinic in 2010. The HLHS program has formed a nationwide research consortium and developed cell-based therapeutics to treat CHD, some of which are currently in clinical trials. The HLHS program’s team of physicians, scientists, and engineers have a combined average of nearly 30 years of experience across their respective disciplines and have focused this expertise on treatments for the most severe forms of CHD, thereby furthering advanced research in genetics, stem cell biology, clinical trials, and cell-based manufacturing. The team developed a platform that enables multiple cell-based clinical trials to be conducted simultaneously in collaboration with a consortium of world class medical institutions. HeartWorks will expand the HLHS program product pipeline and grow its ecosystem of partners to scale up development of new CHD therapies, clinical trials, and product launches. Our ecosystem is a critical component of our success. All of our partners believe in and actively support our vision of transformative product development for the CHD community. We will engender trust with our benefactors, CHD children and families, and partner institutions by sharing data and outcomes at a level not possible before within individual institutions. We will share our successes together.

Last week we lit up our lab! A short and sweet event with an impact that lasts far beyond one evening. Every heart, every name, and every glowing light reminded our team why we do this work and who we do it for.

To everyone who dedicated a light in honor of a Heart Warrior or in memory of a Heart Angel: thank you for trusting HeartWorks with your story. Those lights will continue to bring purpose and motivation to our lab team all season long.

As we look ahead, there are two meaningful ways to stay connected and keep the momentum going:

✨ Start a HeartWorks Team
Gather friends, family, or coworkers to raise awareness and support the future of CHD research. Every team helps move us closer to what matters most.

🍽️ Join Us for the Virtual Dinner – February 19
Get an inside look at our new Eau Claire facility, hear what’s next for HeartWorks, and enjoy an amazing with the community that made this year possible.

Thank you for being part of this night - and part of our mission, every day.

Did You Know? Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day - without you ever having to think about it! 🫀✨

For kids and adults born with Congenital Heart Disease ( ), the heart has to work even harder. Some hearts need support to pump, some need help growing stronger, and others need lifelong monitoring.

Why it matters:
• CHD affects people from the moment they’re born
• Many patients need multiple surgeries
• Innovation can truly change lives

At HeartWorks, we’re helping build a future where every heartbeat is stronger, healthier, and supported by breakthrough science.

Inside our HeartWorks lab, there’s a moment that never stops feeling magical: Under a microscope, living heart cells - grown right in our lab - start beating together.

These tiny beats are a big deal. They show us that the heart tissue we’re building has the potential to one day help people born with congenital heart disease (CHD).

💡 Why We’re Doing This

The heart’s main job is to contract and pump blood. But for many people with CHD, this function is weakened. So we’re working on bioengineered heart tissue that could help strengthen the heart from the inside.

If you or your family have spent the holidays in the hospital, you know what Claire and her family are going through. They are staying strong while Claire waits for her heart transplant. Help bring Christmas cheer to her hospital room as she hopes to collect a postcard from every state. Let's help send her our love.

We use 3D printing to help make cardiac spheroids (tiny balls of heart cells that actually beat together like a mini heart) more precise and easier to produce. Why?

Because 3D printing lets us:
▪️Make the spheroids the perfect size
▪️Create LOTS of them safely
▪️Test different dosages to see what works best

It’s like giving our scientists a super-accurate, heart-healing bakery - creating tiny, consistent batches of beating heart cells. 🍪❤

And the better we make them, the closer we get to helping hearts regrow healthy tissue.
