HeartWorks

HeartWorks HeartWorks is a nonprofit creating outcomes & opportunities for the 1 in 100 born with CHD. Together, we're building a better future for CHD.

We advance research, lead clinical trials, and offer ways to support our mission. Together, WE BUILD HEARTS. HeartWorks was created in June, 2020 to accelerate and expand the product development pioneered by the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), founded at Mayo Clinic in 2010. The HLHS program has formed a nationwide research consortium and developed cell-based therapeutics to treat CHD, some of which are currently in clinical trials. The HLHS program’s team of physicians, scientists, and engineers have a combined average of nearly 30 years of experience across their respective disciplines and have focused this expertise on treatments for the most severe forms of CHD, thereby furthering advanced research in genetics, stem cell biology, clinical trials, and cell-based manufacturing. The team developed a platform that enables multiple cell-based clinical trials to be conducted simultaneously in collaboration with a consortium of world class medical institutions. HeartWorks will expand the HLHS program product pipeline and grow its ecosystem of partners to scale up development of new CHD therapies, clinical trials, and product launches. Our ecosystem is a critical component of our success. All of our partners believe in and actively support our vision of transformative product development for the CHD community. We will engender trust with our benefactors, CHD children and families, and partner institutions by sharing data and outcomes at a level not possible before within individual institutions. We will share our successes together.

Did you know?

Your own cells can be turned into powerful stem cells that help scientists study heart disease.

These are called autologous stem cells, and they’re helping unlock new possibilities in regenerative medicine.

Learn how scientists create them and why they matter in our blog → link in bio / https://heartworksinc.org/what-are-autologous-stem-cells

Heart cells can actually be grown in the lab and they can beat just like a real heart.

Our team uses these beating cells to test therapies, study heart function, and design future treatments for CHD.

This means:
• Faster discoveries
• More accurate testing
• Hope for better outcomes
• A new path toward repairing damaged heart muscle

Every tiny beat in our lab gets us closer to helping real hearts outside the lab.

It’s a great feeling when guests show up early and stay late!!! We had an incredible Feel the Beat event over the weekend.

Heart families, partners, and organizations came together in MN for an afternoon filled with connection, laughter, and community. From rock climbing and face painting to mini highland cows, magic, and meeting Goldy Gopher, the energy in the room was a powerful reminder of how special this CHD community truly is.

Moments like these matter. They remind us that while the journey with congenital heart disease can be challenging, no family walks it alone.

Thank you to , the families who joined us, and everyone working every day to change outcomes for CHD.

Your experience → research data → potential future trials

Information shared through The Co-op @ HeartWorks helps researchers better understand CHD and design studies. If a study may be relevant to you, you may receive information about how to explore participation.

Want to chat about it? DM us if you would like to set up a meeting with Emma, our Co-op rep.

Last week, because of our youngest HeartWorks guests felt the love in a big way.

Their sponsorship of our Kids Packs helped make the 5th Annual Virtual Dinner extra special for the children in our community. These packs weren’t just fun additions to the evening - they were a reminder that kids living with CHD are seen, celebrated, and supported.

Serving schools, teams, and organizations since 1947, Chippewa Valley Sporting Goods has long been a trusted leader across western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. What made this partnership even more meaningful is their personal connection to the CHD community and their continued leadership support of HeartWorks.

We are so grateful for the way they showed up for heart families.

PS - The pictures submitted from the dinner are AWESOME! More to come.

We had a great week at the CHOP Cardiology Conference.

It was inspiring to connect with clinicians and leaders committed to advancing care for children with congenital heart disease. Grateful for the opportunity to share how HeartWorks is contributing to the future of CHD - through breakthrough therapies, clinical trials, and a congenital-first Training & Innovation Center.

The conversations were meaningful and the commitment is strong.

Today is...Retro Day! So we celebrate our history.

Before HeartWorks, there was this.

Our original HLHS program logo represents the earliest chapter of our journey - a commitment to do more for children born with one of the most complex congenital heart defects.

As the science advanced and the need became even clearer, we evolved. From a single-condition focus to a comprehensive congenital-first model. From research support to regenerative medicine, device innovation, clinical readiness, and training infrastructure.

We didn’t pivot away from our roots. We built on them.

Retro logo. Relentless mission.

What a night.

Our 5th Annual HeartWorks Virtual Dinner was our biggest and best yet, bringing together heart families, friends, and supporters from across the country for a night of cooking, connection, and community.

During this event, guests cooked live from home with Chef John, heard meaningful updates from Tim Nelson, and united around a shared mission: accelerating CHD research and supporting families when it matters most.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended. If you weren’t able to join us but would still like to check out our biggest event of the year, we uploaded the whole show on YouTube. Link in bio.

Heart Month reminds us why we do this work, but the work continues every single day.

Thank you for being part of a community that refuses to accept the status quo and believes children and adults living with CHD deserve more.

Let’s finish Heart Month strong! Here are 4 ways to make an impact. - https://mailchi.mp/webuildhearts.org/newsletter-9257858
