As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape the future of radiology, one question comes up often: Will AI replace radiologists?
Researchers from the Mayo Clinic Radiology AI Lab address this directly in their newly published paper, “Beyond Single Systems: How Multi-Agent AI Is Reshaping Ethics in Radiology,” in Bioengineering. Their conclusion is clear—AI is designed to support radiologists, not replace them.
The paper explores how multi-agent AI systems, built with specialized agents that question, cross-check, and complement one another, can enhance ethical oversight, reduce bias, and improve transparency in clinical applications. Rather than removing the human from the loop, this approach reinforces the radiologist’s role as the final decision-maker—keeping patient care at the center.
