🔬 From AI-powered drug discovery to regenerative therapies, Mayo Clinic researchers made major strides in 2025 toward predicting, preventing, and treating complex disease.

One radiology breakthrough is transforming dense breast cancer screening. Nearly half of women in the U.S. have dense breast tissue, which can make cancers harder to detect on mammograms alone. Mayo Clinic researchers found that combining molecular breast imaging (MBI) with a 3D mammogram more than doubles cancer detection in dense breast tissue.

“Our research focuses on detecting the most lethal cancers earlier—when we have the greatest chance to save lives,” says Carrie Hruska, Ph.D., lead author of the study.

Endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women, yet diagnosis and treatment are often delayed due to overlapping symptoms.

In this discussion, Zaraq Khan, M.B.B.S., and Tatnai L. Burnett, M.D. explore how endometriosis develops, its impact on fertility, and the range of personalized, evidence-based treatment options available — from medical management to minimally invasive surgery.

đź©» Radiology plays a critical role in diagnosis, with imaging helping identify and characterize disease to guide patient care. Wendaline VanBuren, M.D. is shown reviewing imaging studies, highlighting how radiologists contribute essential insight along the endometriosis care pathway.

When The New York Times examined large-scale AI screening for pancreatic cancer in China, they turned to Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Ajit Goenka to help contextualize the findings.

In the January 2, 2026 feature, “In China, A.I. Finds Pancreatic Cancer That Doctors May Miss,” Dr. Goenka provides a critical voice of clinical rigor. While the article describes an AI system screening 180,000 patients to identify a small number of cancers, he highlights the often-overlooked cost of low-prevalence screening: false positives.

Dr. Goenka warns of the “terror of a potential pancreatic cancer diagnosis” and the resulting “cascade of care,” including unnecessary, invasive, and costly testing for healthy patients triggered by low-fidelity AI. His perspective shifts the conversation from detection at any cost to responsible, high-fidelity early detection—reinforcing Mayo Radiology’s leadership in defining how AI should be implemented to save lives without harming the healthy.
