As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape the future of radiology, one question comes up often: Will AI replace radiologists?

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic Radiology AI Lab address this directly in their newly published paper, “Beyond Single Systems: How Multi-Agent AI Is Reshaping Ethics in Radiology,” in Bioengineering. Their conclusion is clear—AI is designed to support radiologists, not replace them.

The paper explores how multi-agent AI systems, built with specialized agents that question, cross-check, and complement one another, can enhance ethical oversight, reduce bias, and improve transparency in clinical applications. Rather than removing the human from the loop, this approach reinforces the radiologist’s role as the final decision-maker—keeping patient care at the center.

🧠 Deep Learning–Accelerated 3D FLAIR for White Matter Lesion Detection in Multiple Sclerosis: A Feasibility Study

A recent publication highlights Mayo Clinic, Rochester’s work on deep learning–based image reconstruction to accelerate 3D FLAIR while improving evaluation of white matter lesions in multiple sclerosis.

In a prospective, reader-blinded study of 26 MS patients scanned on a 3T system, DL-accelerated 3D FLAIR outperformed conventional 3D FLAIR—showing significant improvements in image quality, diagnostic confidence, and detection of small (

🔬 From AI-powered drug discovery to regenerative therapies, Mayo Clinic researchers made major strides in 2025 toward predicting, preventing, and treating complex disease.

One radiology breakthrough is transforming dense breast cancer screening. Nearly half of women in the U.S. have dense breast tissue, which can make cancers harder to detect on mammograms alone. Mayo Clinic researchers found that combining molecular breast imaging (MBI) with a 3D mammogram more than doubles cancer detection in dense breast tissue.

“Our research focuses on detecting the most lethal cancers earlier—when we have the greatest chance to save lives,” says Carrie Hruska, Ph.D., lead author of the study.

Endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women, yet diagnosis and treatment are often delayed due to overlapping symptoms.

In this discussion, Zaraq Khan, M.B.B.S., and Tatnai L. Burnett, M.D. explore how endometriosis develops, its impact on fertility, and the range of personalized, evidence-based treatment options available — from medical management to minimally invasive surgery.

🩻 Radiology plays a critical role in diagnosis, with imaging helping identify and characterize disease to guide patient care. Wendaline VanBuren, M.D. is shown reviewing imaging studies, highlighting how radiologists contribute essential insight along the endometriosis care pathway.
