The nervous system is always scanning and taking in information from the world around you.
The brain then interprets the information, and since the brain is comprised of memory, it can only use past experiences to filter that interpretation.
If your past experiences were loaded with threats (such as a parent who yelled or hit you, a sibling or someone at school who bullied you, or even an emotionally unpredictable adult) your nervous system learned to scan for threat more intensely.
It takes time to retrain the nervous system to feel more safe. To help that happen, here is a little Neuroscience trick:
Spend time EVERY DAY searching for signs of safety.
This could be physical signs like having a roof over your head, having water to drink when you're thirsty. It could also be emotional signs such as feeling into your heart space and reminding yourself that you're a badass who has survived every day of life so far. It could be spiritual signs such as trusting your path.
Just spend some time searching for signs of safety and use your breath to ground your energy. Pull your focus out of your head and into your body.
When you realize that you're safe, the anxiety can lighten and eventually release.
