why are SO MANY breastfeeding mamas told to stop breastfeeding their babies at night in order to prevent cavities supposedly?
Breastfed babies arenβt immune to cavities, of course, but the root cause of them (genetics, diet, oral hygieneβ¦) has nothing to do with breastfeeding.
Research shows breastfeeding actually PROTECTS against tooth decay. Breast milk contains antibodies combating cavity-causing bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, and lactoferrin goes further by KILLING these bacteria.
The push for night weaning stems from societal norms, where 'standardized' advice doesn't seamlessly apply to breastfeeding. Formula-induced 'baby bottle mouth' doesn't align with breast milk's protective qualities, as breastfeeding prevents liquid pooling due to its unique biology.
Archaeological studies reveal prehistoric breastfed children rarely faced tooth decay. Despite this, modern mamas face pressure to cut night feeds over an unfounded fear of cavities.
Have you been told not to breastfeed your baby to sleep because it will damage baby's teeth or that you have to brush baby's teeth or wipe their mouth after feeding?
Breastfeeding is biologically and evolutionarily protective. You've got this mama. πͺ
