This message will be on all of my social media platforms. It is intended for all of my patients who, for whatever reason, didn't receive my farewell letter. I retired from dentistry on 9/7/19. By now, it needed a little editing.

To my Cherished Patients,

After 44 years of practicing dentistry in Rochester, I'm ready to enter the next important stage of my life- retirement. It has been my pleasure to serve as your dentist and confidant for all these years. For several families, I have even had the honor of having provided dental care to three generations!

My dad and mentor, Dr. Lauriston O'Connor, established his private practice in 1972; I joined him in 1976 after I completed my dental residency at the original Eastman Dental Center. We treated patients as a father-and-son team for two decades.

The effort to make our office as comfortable and efficient as possible has been the brainchild of Ms. Eboney Barnes, my fantastic Receptionist-turned-Office-Manager. She has been a mainstay for many years. I would like to especially thank her! I am sure patients will miss her intellect, warmth, and familiarity. I will miss working with Eboney, but we are both ready to move on and enjoy other aspects of our lives.

Throughout the years, I have employed many people and I deeply appreciate their contributions to my practice. Of late, I'd also like to thank my hygienists Diane Tuxhill and Jan Burdick, and long-time friend and former hygienist Donna Postell-Smith. We made a great team! Also, a shout out to some favorites: Deja Archie, Jessica Crowley, Deb Styker, Rhonda Barton, Michelle McCollough, and so many others... well, you know who you are : )

I have passed the practice onto Dr. Bhumija Gupta, a respected professor of residents at Eastman Institute of Oral Health. Dr. Gupta is now the owner of 521 Beahan Rd. Dr. Gupta has a wonderful family- husband, Sam and two lovely daughters.

I look forward to rededicating my time to my creative endeavors and invite you to keep up with me on Facebook, and other online platforms where I share my paintings and sculptures. I am also delighted by the prospect of traveling, spending more time with my daughters, and finding other ways of being a part of our community... and sleeping in past 6 AM : ).

And again, thank you for trusting me with your care for so many years. It has been my great pleasure to serve this community and to be a part of your lives. God Bless you all!

Sincerely,

Dr. Rodney O'Connor

After 2 months after my rotator cuff surgery, I'm feeling more like myself. Actually, my afflictions had me somewhat depressed for a while, not being able to work and all. Now, I can't wait to have my hip replacement next year. My parents and grandparents must have suffered with arthritic aliments, but they didn't whine about it, ask for prayers, or announce their affliciton with a megaphone.

I am thankful to live in an age whereby we can be helped with medical science; its wonderful. And another thing...Tylenol Extra Strength ROCKS!!!

Thanks to all of my great patients, who didn't want to be treated by some other dentist, and preferred to wait for me.

I have another dentist working with me now, Dr. Garmia Naresh, who will work 2 days out of the week. The last time, I had the pleasure of working alongside another dentist on a regular basis, was with my dad, Lauriston, back in 1988.

On another front, I finally released my album of original music- Time Traveled (by DOCMATRIX). The CDs will be available at my office (13 neo-Jazz songs) and available for download at Amazon Music, Spotify, iTunes, etc. (all proceeds will go toward my younger daughter's(Candice) college and post grad expenses :0)

My older daughter, Elena, has been singing and starring in operas in Europe for the last 6 months or so- Phorheim, Germany, Rumania, Paris... You can check her out on Instagram, Spotify and YouTube. I'm so proud of my young ladies.🥰

I wish each and every one of you, a safe and Merry Christmas, and a healthy; prosperous New Year! Thanks for thinking about me.

Hello, everyone. After 43 years of Dentistry's wear and tear, I find myself in need of rotator cuff surgery and possible hip surgery as well. I am in search of a dentist willing to examine my hygiene patients and possibly my regularly scheduled patients as well. And if anyone is interested in an associateship or buying-in, I'd be happy to entertain those scenarios too.

All the best to everyone!

I am grateful for many things, this Thanksgiving!

Gratitude unlocks the fullness in life. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order; confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home; a stranger into a friend.

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.

With time and technology, the current protocol is bound to change. All front teeth don't need to be crowned after root canal therapy:

There has been a major change in thinking about how to treat teeth after having root canals. A few decades ago, most all teeth having root canals ended up having a post and core and full crown restorations. Today more thought is put into how to restore the tooth.

If a tooth does not have a fracture or large filling, but gets a root canal, then usually the best treatment is just a post and core (like rebar for poured concrete)-
an internal fiberglass rod, cemented for internal support, since the tooth will become somewhat brittle; moisturizing blood no longer saturates the pulp chamber and surrounding tooth structure.

NightLase Snoring Treatment - No anesthesia required and post-op discomfort is minimal (feels like a minor sore throat for a few hours- I've experienced NL myself). Each session takes about twenty minutes and is done three times, two weeks apart.

Chronic snoring is not just a nuisance for the wakeful sleep partner. The vibrations from the chronic snoring irritate the carotid arteries, making them more susceptible to harboring athrosclerotic plaques, thus enhancing the risk of cerebral strokes from oxygen deprivation.

Nightlase of Rochester: “Goodbye to Snoring.”

Have you ever gone to sleep and dreamed that you were running from a loud, old-time freight train..., only to wake up and find that your sleep partner is just snoring? Snoring is not just a nuisance for one’s sleep partner, but the vibrations can irritate the inside lining of the carotid arteries, causing inflammation and textured irregularities (see Medical News Today https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/255459.php), thus making it easier for atherosclerotic plaques to collect. This condition can result in chronic oxygen depletion in the brain and can lead to ED, weight gain, chronic fatigue and even a stroke.

Then, there can be times when the airway is so obstructed by soft tissues in the back of the mouth that the person actually stops breathing for periods of time- sleep apnea.

Classically, these situations have been dealt with painful surgical approaches (cutting away portions of the soft palate), the CPAP machine- a machine that forces air into the mouth or nostrils to keep the airway patent. For moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, this contraption is very effective, but it can be a bit noisy, cumbersome with the attached hose, and is definitely not sexy.

Another modality is the M.A.D. appliance (mandibular advancement device), which is purported to open the airway by keeping the lower jutted out forwardly throughout the night. For some reason, I don’t want my jaw looking like Sammy Davis’ for 6 to 8 hours during the night.
