We have been fabricating custom ocular and scleral shell prostheses since that time. Strauss received his Board Certification in 1984 from the National Examining Board of Ocularists and is a Board Approved Diplomate Member of the American Society of Ocularists (A*O). He has served on the Education Committee and Board of Directors of the A*O and is a frequent faculty lecturer. James is also a Clinical Assistant in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester. In addition to patient care, he designs and fabricates many of the tools and products used by other ocularists. Michael J. Strauss' interest in the fabrication of ocular prosthetics began while in high school. Michael received his Bachelor of Arts degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York in 1999. He joined the family business and received his Board Certification from the National Examining Board of Ocularists in 2005 and is a Board Approved Diplomate Member of the American Society of Ocularists (A*O). Michael was awarded the Joseph A. LeGrand Award and was the Memorial Lecturer in Chicago 2005. The Joseph A. LeGrand Award is presented each year to one Ocularist who is recognized for workshop presentations, academic achievements, character and contributions to the American Society of Ocularists. In 2020 Michael became Chair of the National Examining Board of Ocularists (NEBO). The National Examining Board of Ocularists is designed to assess the competence of the ocularist in performing the variety of health care and related functions and tasks normally encountered in the fitting and fabrication of ophthalmic prosthetics.The National Examining Board of Ocularists, NEBO, is an independent board consisting of Ocularists and members of related professions, including ophthalmology, orthotics and prosthetics and a public member.

Strauss Eye Prosthetics has decided to close for to 2 weeks during the Covid-19 outbreak to slow the spread. We encourage our patients to stay safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. If patients need to reach out to our office we will be monitoring our voicemails and emails periodically during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience but we don’t want to put our patients or staff at risk. Hopefully 3 weeks for “social/physical distancing” won’t turn into 3 months.....

COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Our office remains open to assist you but with limited staff and hours. If you feel you have been exposed to Coronavirus or have symptoms, quarantine yourself at home.

Symptoms include:
Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath

Exposure is defined as being within six feet of a COVID-19-infected person for at least five minutes.

The symptoms present differently for different people. It’s most important that everyone be vigilant and limit your exposure to others no matter how you feel. If you are symptom free and must be out and about, maintain a distance of 6’ or more between you and others.

If you have quarantined yourself as a precautionary measure be sure to call the office to discuss rescheduling your appointment.

For patients who come to the office for any type of appointment, we are asking that no one sit in our waiting room. Instead, when you park your car, check in by calling the office with your cell phone to indicate you have arrived in the parking lot. We will call you when an exam room is ready for you. Please stay in your car until you receive our call. We will be thoroughly cleaning exam rooms between visits. If you do not have a cell phone, then proceed to the office.

For patients with compromised immune systems we ask that you reschedule any near future appointments or wait to schedule an appointment as the weeks unfold.
