And a shout out to Nick Wilbur, South East Area Coalition, Highland Park Conservancy, Friends of Rochester's AIDS Remembrance Garden at Highland Park and the many individuals who've dug in over the years to help keep the garden going. Every w**d pulled, every shovel turned made a difference! 🌳🌼

“Seven people with HIV were able to control the virus without medication for *several months* — and in one case for more than a year — after undergoing complex immune therapy.”

This is one of three hopeful reports released yesterday (World AIDS Day!), indicating researchers are honing in on cures for HIV infection.

Seven of 10 volunteers kept HIV at bay for months after stopping meds, a rare result scientists call a major step toward a functional cure.

On , we mark the many ways URochester has advanced the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In 1981, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry alumnus Michael Gottlieb became the first physician to identify and describe the disease. Our River Campus Libraries hold one of the world’s largest collections of HIV/AIDS posters and visual resources. And the work continues through the Rochester Victory Alliance, among the first five clinics worldwide dedicated to HIV vaccine research.

When your new HIV study nurse arrives decked out in red scrubs for World AIDS Day, you know you've made a good choice. *

Today, we handed out mini AIDS poster cards and other goodies to folks here at URMC. When the CDC and NIH are forbidden from acknowledging , it is doubly important for us to remind people that the virus continues to exist.

Happily, research to find a vaccine also continues, here and around the world; prevention and treatment options are ever expanding.

*We're excited to have Sally Thomas on the team, and we'll post a fuller introduction later this week!
