Dear Friends,
As Congress exhibits its stance, people are experiencing hardship. The employees of PossAbilities are conducting a quiet, internal food drive to help our families who are losing SNAP benefits. We are talking about various scenarios to help people maneuver around the ever-changing landscape of support services. And, we are monitoring emotional stress and offering guidance. If you are struggling - emotionally, physically, or with food insecurity - please reach out to a family member or friend. Have hope, and know we will get through these uncertain times. You are strong. PossAbilities cares.

We are sad to share that Lorna Schunke passed away. Lorna was one of the founding mothers of PossAbilities. Her desired to create more opportunities for people with disabilities was inspired by her daughter Cheryl, who recently passed and was active with PossAbilities since her mother helped launch the organization in 1962.

Lorna shared her powerful story at A Night of PossAbilities in 2023, where she spoke passionately about the challenges faced by people with disabilities in the 50s and 60s. Her story was featured in the Rochester Post Bulletin. Lorna's vision was to build a supportive community where every person could thrive. Her legacy continues to guide us today. She will be missed and remembered by many.

When Lorna Schunke was raising her daughter Cheryl in the 1950s, there were few options for those with developmental disabilities.

We enjoy discovering new resources that can be of benefit for people using PossAbilities services.

Dear Friends,

The failure of Congress to pass a budget has resulted in a partial shutdown of the Federal government. Please know that a short-term shutdown is not expected to have impact on our programs. As in previous state and federal shutdowns, Medicaid for disabilities is classified as an essential service so we expect funding to continue during this impasse. We will continue to monitor the situation, along with the Department of Human Services and our state and national associations, and keep you up to date as the situation evolves. Remember, that you are all valued in everything you do to assist people.

Respectfully, Sue Mackert
PossAbilities Executive Director
