Today, Alex attended the Emergency Nurses Association Iowa State Council's annual conference to deliver his talk, "Critical Incident Stress Management and The Call That Changed You."

For emergency nurses and public safety personnel, strong mental wellness directly impacts patient care, decision-making, teamwork, and operational readiness. Healthy responders are better equipped to provide compassionate, focused, and more effective care during emergencies.

Building a culture that supports mental health strengthens morale, improves retention, enhances team cohesion, and ensures responders can continue serving their communities with professionalism and compassion.

After all, we are all in this together. We need to take care of each other, if we don't who will?

Morale also plays a major role in resilience. Our family of emergency professionals routinely face trauma, loss, and unpredictable environments. A culture that supports mental health, recognizes effort, and fosters teamwork helps individuals process those experiences and continue showing up ready to serve. Without that support, the cumulative weight of the job becomes unsustainable.

Last week's storms may have been close to some of us, but our EMS family was affected.

If you are able to help support family members of our SE/WI EMS family, please consider donating.

Recovery doesn’t end when the storm passes. Ongoing support through community resources, schools, faith organizations, and local agencies helps families rebuild not just their homes, but their sense of normalcy. Just like in EMS, it takes a coordinated effort, compassion, and consistency to help people move forward after disaster strikes.

Outstanding work!

Citizen Life Saving Award

On February 1, 2026, at Hiniker Pond, a man fell through the ice and was clinging to the edge in freezing water.

Tracey Stenberg witnessed the incident, quickly called 911, and enlisted the help of David Balk. Together, they went onto the ice and pulled the man to safety before first responders arrived.
