The winter solstice will be upon us this Sunday, and on this “Longest Night” of the year, Jewish Home, along with the Alzheimer’s Association, will shine a light on Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness. Longer nights can worsen evening agitation and confusion for those living with dementia, a symptom known as “sundowning.” Decreased sunlight and colder temperatures can result in disruptions to routine, hormonal shifts, and increased restlessness.
Some tips that may minimize these disturbances: Maximize light, either natural or use of a light box; create a calming evening routine; avoid caffeine in the evening; and find ways to add gentle movement into the day.
Remember, you are not alone. We invite you to reach out to our Dementia Care Navigator at (585) 784-6512 and learn more about the Clare & Jerry Rotenberg Center for Excellence in Dementia Care at Jewish Home at https://www.jewishhomeroc.org/dementia-center-for-excellence/.
