North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, NCI AHEC

North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, NCI AHEC NCI AHEC has a “grow our own approach” to improving healthcare.

AHEC is a statewide network of organizational partnerships working to improve community based primary health care by recruiting, educating, and retaining healthcare professionals in under-served areas of Indiana. NCI AHEC works to increase awareness of potential healthcare careers among minority and rural, K-12 students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, NCI AHEC facilitates the clinical rotations of healthcare students into medically underserved communities in North Central Indiana. The hope is that students will train in those communities and then decide to practice in those communities. Continuing education for existing providers will also be available through the NCI AHEC program. The NCI-AHEC will include Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Tipton, and White counties.

The Recovery Cafe of Lafayette was awarded the 2024 Partnership Matters Award by the North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center. Lindsey Kreps, Executive Director, Ida Vanadore, Operations Manager, Meagan Wykoff, Program Coordinator, and Haley Wykoff, Outreach Team, received the award. This partnership has given students the opportunity to engage an underserved community and many members of its at-risk population. They are growing as future providers and learning how to meet people where they are and share the knowledge that they have gained through their education. It has been a very productive relationship, and it is our hope at NCI AHEC to continue to grow this relationship in order to serve the community and raise up strong, respectful, competent healthcare professionals who know how to reach even the most vulnerable in their communities.

The program is ideal for students in a variety of clinical training programs.

"I've enjoyed the program has pushed me to learn more than what is taught in medical school and has helped me become better acquainted with different healthcare professions." Chris Schimmoeller, Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctorate of Osteopathy, 3rd year, on his experience as an AHEC Scholar.

A very big thank you to Rhonda Garrison and David Patterson at the Marian University Simulation Center for hosting two of our Indiana University Kokomo STEPS students on Friday!

Following their time in the Sim Center, they even had the opportunity to sit in on a class with Doctor Summers where they could ask questions about family medicine, patient care, and got to see a glimpse into their future as they watched Marian University’s current first and second year students practice on one another.
