Good news: Monroe County is seeing its first significant decline in overdose deaths in years!

This is a hopeful sign that prevention, early intervention, and harm reduction efforts are making a real impact. Our experts credit expanded naloxone access, stronger community partnerships, data-driven action, and improved pathways to treatment as key drivers of this progress.

There’s still much work ahead, but this shift shows that evidence-based approaches can save lives!

We’re excited to continue our partnership with Refugees Helping Refugees (RHR), providing free health education while having open conversations with clients about accessing and navigating the healthcare system.

In collaboration with the UR Medicine Mobile Mammography and Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Community Outreach and Engagement teams, we’ve shared information about cancer prevention, including nutrition and screening guidelines. Education has been translated by RHR staff into both Dari and Arabic, allowing for individualized conversation.

Next week, the UR Mobile Mammography van will be on site providing mammograms to clients who qualify and are interested.

Our Center was excited to partner with the Senior Adult Community Engagement Project at Common Ground Health for its "Not Forgotten" initiative that supports area nursing homes during the winter holiday season. 💓

Staff collected t-shirts, hoodies, socks, plush animals, lotion, and hygiene products and wrote cards to residents. The donation effort was coordinated by our Prince Street Council for Culture and Engagement team.

We're thankful for our Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA) community and the ability to give back! Our Emerging Infections Program team recently adopted the NOTA food cupboard located at the Multi-Use Community Cultural Center (MuCCC) on Atlantic Ave. The group raised $225 and filled a completely empty cupboard last Thursday with a variety of foods and hygiene products.

This cupboard was built by members of the NOTA community, is filled by individuals as they are able, and is accessible to anyone who may need it.

Our Story

Making Rochester a Healthier Community Imagine living in one of the healthiest communities in the world. This is the ambitious goal of The Center for Community Health & Prevention. We are at the heart of a community-wide transformation to make Rochester a healthier place to live, learn, work and play. Our mission:To join forces with the community to eliminate health inequalities and improve health through research, education and service. The Center for Community Health & Prevention was established by the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) to develop and expand academic-community health partnerships dedicated to improving the health of our community. It represents a new model of institutional commitment to community health that focuses on prevention. In a pivotal “match making” role, the Center connects URMC faculty, students and staff with community partners. Our shared goals are to increase community services and community-based research to improve health one person, one program, and one policy at a time. Today, community health is formally recognized as the fourth mission of the medical center, alongside research, education and service.
