✨ Communicating with Someone Living With Dementia ✨
Every day, we’re given the opportunity to meet someone exactly where they are — and when it comes to dementia care, that simple act of compassion can change everything.
One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that communication isn’t just about words. It’s about connection. Tone. Patience. Presence. It’s about slowing down long enough to understand the world the other person is experiencing.
The dementia specialist in this video teaches something truly beautiful:
💛 People with dementia are not giving us a hard time — they are having a hard time.
When we shift our approach from correcting to connecting, everything softens.
When we respond to emotion rather than logic, trust grows.
When we honor their lived reality instead of pulling them into ours, we preserve dignity.
A few gentle reminders for all of us:
🌿 Validate feelings, even if the details aren’t accurate.
🌿 Offer choices instead of demands.
🌿 Keep your tone warm and your body language open.
🌿 Step into their moment instead of forcing them into yours.
🌿 And above all — give grace, to them and to yourself.
Caring for someone with dementia is sacred work. It stretches our hearts, teaches us patience, and shows us the deepest forms of empathy. I’m grateful for educators like the specialist in this video, who shine a light on how we can do better — and love better.
If you care for, live with, or simply love someone with dementia, I think you’ll appreciate these insights as much as I do. 💜
