2026 marks a monumental milestone — 70 years of Ability Building Community!

For seven decades, we’ve walked alongside people with disabilities, creating opportunities to belong, contribute, and thrive. This year, we honor the progress made, celebrate the impact happening today, and look boldly toward a more inclusive future. We can’t wait to share this special anniversary with our community.

A Message from our Executive Director, Sarah Timmerman -

As I look back on 2025, I am filled with gratitude and pride. This year brought its share of challenges for our field, yet it also reminded us of the strength, creativity, and compassion that define our organization.

One of the greatest highlights of the year was welcoming new staff members across all of our locations. Their dedication and energy allowed us to make meaningful progress on our waiting list, expand community-based work services, and offer a wider range of inclusive, community-based recreational activities. Because of this collective effort, more people had opportunities to grow and thrive in ways that matter most to them.

We also celebrated an important milestone: supporting more than 35 individuals in securing competitive employment of their choice. Each of these successes represents not just a job, but increased independence, confidence, and a world of possibility.

As we prepare to enter our 70th year of service, I am inspired by how far we have come and energized by what lies ahead. For seven decades, we have grown, adapted, and evolved to better support people in building skills, accessing meaningful work, and so much more. That spirit of growth continues today.

The future is bright, and I am deeply thankful to our staff, the individuals we serve, families, and community partners who make this work possible. I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish together in the years to come.

Ability Building Community (ABC) is in our Volunteer Spotlight!

Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, ABC’s Abilities Integrated Crews deliver nutritious meals, and moments of friendship, to neighbors across Rochester. By visiting many of the same individuals each week, volunteers build trust, confidence, and a strong sense of purpose. For people engaged in ABC’s programming, the delivery routes provide hands-on opportunities to practice communication, teamwork, and responsibility. For Meals on Wheels recipients, the visits offer not only a nutritious meal but also companionship and reassurance.

Family Service Rochester is deeply grateful for ABC’s meaningful and long-standing partnership with Meals on Wheels, and to each individual volunteer, we thank you.

Dan earned this award because of his outstanding performance, reliability and commitment to growing his independence at work. Dan takes pride in his work, moves confidently from task to task, and supports his peers without hesitation. Dan’s honesty, strong communication, and dedication to quality have made him a leader at Chatfield and a dependable team member wherever he goes. With over 20 years at ABC, he continues to model excellent attendance, a positive attitude, and a commitment to doing his best every day.

Our goal is to see that every person, regardless of disability, is respected as an individual and is the one whose voice is most clearly heard thought-out the entire service design and delivery process.
